The City of Dublin is presently seeking an Intern for the Communications Division within the City Manager's Office to provide a variety of routine to program-oriented tasks. A few specific projects the intern may perform include representing City of Dublin at community events, assisting with a variety of communication efforts; social media content creation efforts, including taking pictures, creating videos, writing captions, and scheduling posts across multiple platforms; respond to various photography requests around the City and assist in cataloging photo files; and monitoring and updating the City's website.
The Intern will have networking opportunities both within the City and with other agencies. The intern can expect to learn valuable professional skills such as project management, organization, communication methods, community organizing, and others. The position offers an opportunity for the Intern to interact with high-level Staff and to make department/public presentations. The Intern will be assigned a mentor and may attend monthly special events/functions with guest speakers. This internship will provide an opportunity to become acquainted with the City and gain an overall view of municipal government through the opportunity to work with multiple city departments and outside agencies.
In addition to the essential duties listed below, the successful candidate will also be expected to:
- Assist with social media efforts, graphic design, and drafting news flash alerts.
- Assist with monitoring and updating the City's website.
- Photography.
- Catalog photo files.
- Complete CivicPlus training; edit webpages; create calendar entries and news flashes.
- Draft press releases.
- Draft newsletter articles.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for this internship is eager to gain hands-on experience in the dynamic field of government communications. They are interested in learning how cities engage with their communities through digital and traditional media and are excited to contribute to the City of Dublin's outreach efforts.
The ideal candidate should have experience in content creation, graphic design, and writing for various platforms. They understand the current digital landscape and can assist with creating graphics, scheduling social media posts, and drafting written communications such as news flashes or website copy. The ideal candidate will have the ability to operate a camera and basic editing tools. Strong photography and videography skills (mobile is acceptable) are essential, as they will help capture and produce engaging visual content for the City's digital channels. Knowledge of the Adobe photo, video and design products are a plus (comparable professional tools are acceptable).
Distinguishing Characteristics
The Intern is a single class position, fully competent to perform a variety of support and project oriented tasks and duties. Incumbents are required to have achieved at least Senior standing in a four-year degree program or enrolled in a graduate degree program. This class is characterized by the availability of supervision and non-routine circumstances. Specific duties will vary with the organizational unit to which assigned.
Supervision Received and Exercised
This position receives direction from management personnel, and may receive technical and functional supervision from other administrative, professional or technical personnel.

Minimum Qualifications
Training and Experience
Required
Any combination equivalent to education and experience is likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: Have achieved at least Senior status in a four-year degree program or enrolled in a graduate program. Academic course work should be related to city government such as: public administration, planning, civil engineering, business, criminal justice, recreation or a related field.
Experience: Experience or course work in city government, public administration and/or general office practices is desirable but not required.
Knowledge of
- Basic principles and fundamentals related to local government operating functions such as City Manager's Office, Administrative Services, Community Development, Public Works, Police Services, or Parks and Community Services Department.
- Modern office practices, methods, procedures and computer equipment.
- Basic research and analysis methods.
- Basic business data processing principles and the use of personal computers and word processing software.
Ability to
- Communicate tactfully and effectively with the public.
- Complete assignments in a timely manner.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Prioritize work and coordinate several activities.
- Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
