Position Overview:
The Senior Director, Corporate and Philanthropic Communications, will provide expertise and leadership in the area of corporate communications, employee communications and messaging strategy. They will lead the development of plans to promote PBS priorities and initiatives to staff, donor stakeholders, and other key audiences.
The Senior Director is responsible for articulating PBS’ vision and mission to internal audiences and key philanthropic individuals interested in investing in the future of PBS. They will be a centralized resource for internal staff communications and manage a small team to articulate the priorities and plans of senior management across a variety of communications vehicles.
The Senior Director will serve as the point-person within the communications department for the PBS Foundation and will be responsible for developing and managing materials and resources to communicate effectively with donors and prospective donors. The Senior Director oversees a portfolio of ongoing projects to help steward these efforts.
Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Corporate Communications:
- Develop and implement strategic plans for staff communications.
- Work with internal clients to develop, enhance or edit new content.
- Serve as a trusted resource for the senior leadership team around communications strategy and best practices.
- Oversee the development of corporate messaging and materials, and provide strategic oversight of corresponding websites, to tell and support the PBS story. This may include coordinating the drafting and/or editing of fact sheets, backgrounders, brochures, presentations, and reports.
- Lead the creation and implementation of communications tools that can be leveraged by PBS member stations.
- Serves as the liaison when working with internal and external vendors to produce marketing and promotional materials.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Philanthropic Communications:
- Create and manage a strategy for a wide variety of internal and external communications for PBS and PBS Foundation-related initiatives.
- Design, manage and implement communications strategies and tactics for internal and PBS Foundation audiences in response to issues tied to PBS’ content, funding, regulatory, legal, technology, sponsorship, personnel, and financial or editorial activities; anticipating and proactively addressing issues as much as possible.
- Oversee, write and edit PBS and PBS Foundation communications, including: newsletters, project descriptions, summaries of fundraising opportunities; proposals, and other externally-focused marketing and communications materials.
- Closely collaborate with all PBS Foundation staff, especially frontline fundraisers, to create effective donor and prospect communications and touch points including but not limited to donor acknowledgements, reports, updates and e-blasts.
- Oversee management of the PBS Foundation website content and upgrades, tests for website performance, implements strategies to increase newsletter subscribers, and troubleshoots website issues.
Requirements for success:
- 10 or more years of experience in corporate communications, employee communications, and/or development/fundraising communications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field; or the equivalent combination of education and experience
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
- Experience developing corporate messaging in collaboration with senior executives
- Strategic thinker and innovator ensuring PBS’ story is relevant to key stakeholders
- Proven ability to successfully work with organization’s leadership to develop communications strategies
- Strong writing and editing skills across a wide range of communications vehicles
- Proactive leadership style and the ability to set priorities, organize, and manage diverse activities to meet deadlines
- Ability to quickly grasp complex subject matter and translate it into messages that are easily understood by all stakeholders at various levels
- Ability to develop strategies that enhance communication and collaboration inter- and intra-departmentally
- Ability to treat confidential information with sensitivity and discretion
- Highly self-motivated and able to work independently, in teams, and as a team leader
- Well-developed diplomacy skills, and exceptional interpersonal and judgement skills
