Are you a creative storyteller with a knack for turning big ideas into impactful messages? Do you thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment where no two days are the same? If so, we want you to be part of our team at Washington Hebrew Congregation! We’re hiring a Communications Manager to help us connect with our dynamic congregation and engage with the wider world.
A Little About Us
Washington Hebrew Congregation is a vibrant, warm, welcoming community with four rabbis, two cantors, and more than 1,900 families. We are also the oldest synagogue in D.C., at 173 years and counting and the largest Reform congregation in the area. We have two amazing facilities – our Temple in the Cathedral Heights neighborhood of Northwest DC, and our suburban campus in Potomac, Maryland.
Some of the (Many) Ways You’ll Make an Impact
Monday, you might be brainstorming with our Senior Communications Manager about how to promote an upcoming event that’s sure to be the talk of the community. Tuesday, you could be working with one of our auxiliary groups on their big fundraiser, designing a vibrant social media post, or keeping our website polished and up-to-date.
You’ll help craft content that not only informs but also inspires — whether it’s a video spotlighting our clergy, an email campaign about a new program, or eye-catching graphics for print and digital channels. Your words and visuals will make people want to join in, show up, and be part of the magic.
And speaking of magic, you’ll be the wizard behind the curtain for our weekly e-newsletter, making sure it’s packed with the latest information on what’s happening at WHC. Plus, you’ll manage online event registrations and ensure our calendar is always current.
We’re a collaborative, step-in-and-help, let’s-find-a-way-to-make-it-work organization, so the examples above are not intended to be a complete list of all the ways you can make a difference.
What You’ll Bring to the Table
We’re looking for someone with a blend of creativity and strategy. You’ve got a way with words, an eye for design, and a passion for connecting people. You love diving into the data to see what’s working and experimenting with new ways to boost engagement. If there’s a trend in digital marketing, you’re already on top of it — and you’re excited to bring fresh ideas to the team.
You know how to juggle multiple projects without breaking a sweat, and you’re committed to making sure every detail is just right. Whether you’re tweaking a social media caption or managing a big communications campaign, you take pride in elevating your work (and everyone else’s) to the next level.
Your Secret Weapons
You’ve got a toolkit of technical skills that makes you a force to be reckoned with. Here’s a glimpse of what will be on your screens:
- Email marketing platforms like Constant Contact? You’ve got that down.
- WordPress? It’s practically your second language.
- Adobe Creative Suite and Canva? You create visual magic.
- Tools like Microsoft Office, Teams, and Asana? You use them like a pro.
- Analytics? You can spot trends and translate them into actionable insights.
Oh, and if you’ve got graphic design chops or know your way around video and audio production, that’s the cherry on top.
Why You’ll Love It Here
At Washington Hebrew Congregation, we celebrate each other’s wins, learn from challenges, and work together to make a real impact. This is a place where your ideas are valued, your creativity is celebrated, and your work truly makes a difference.
We are a synagogue that creates community; fostering connections and building relationships are critical to our success. Regardless of the roles we play, each of us has a passion for serving the needs of others and making a positive impact on our community.
Familiarity with Judaism is important. However, if you aren’t Jewish, being curious and willing to learn are key to success.
The Details You Really Want to Know
The salary range for this position is $65,000 – 75,000, based on experience. We offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes complimentary Temple membership, excellent health care and retirement benefits, generous time off, paid parental leave, and discounted tuition for our Early Childhood Center.
We have a hybrid work environment. Our team is typically in the office at Temple on Macomb St. three days a week and remote two days. Because of the nature of the job and because we’re a synagogue, there will be (infrequent) times when you’ll be asked to work in the evening or on the weekend.
Washington Hebrew Congregation is an equal opportunity employer. We value the power of diversity, inclusion, and collaboration in our workplace and strive to create an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to succeed.
