Education Coordinator: Full Time
Position Summary
GrowNYC Education cultivates agency among city communities and residents to understand how to access and actively participate in city services, like curbside composting. GrowNYC Education also delivers educational programming across several program areas to a wide range of city residents in all five boroughs. Reporting to the Education Manager, the Education Coordinator will work to improve our citywide effort of increasing curbside composting participation to increase the city’s food scraps waste diversion rates. The Education Coordinator will work independently with New York City residents to support their successful participation in the city’s municipal curbside composting program. This position is a hybrid field and office-based position requiring an intermediate level of experience supporting stakeholders with recycling/composting education and waste operations help.
Requirements
Temporary Education Coordinator Responsibilities (Including but are not limited to):
Education & Engagement
- Facilitate training for city residents on composting and waste diversion.
- Lead educational opportunities using existing GrowNYC educational materials or vetted external materials with focus on compost and waste sorting.
- Conduct targeted educational outreach in medium to high density neighborhoods throughout New York City including door to door outreach.
- Conduct compliance visits to address residences flagged by DSNY for non-compliance with the program
- Establish and implement applicable methods for promoting communication on waste and sustainability to NYC’s building and home residents.
- Develop and distribute educational composting materials that to help homeowners participate and apartment dwellers learn how to effectively work with their building managers to participate in curbside composting
- Develop strong relationships with local community groups in order to partner with them to offer composting/food scrap collection education.
- Cultivate waste sorting and composting competence by empowering city residents to effectively use the municipal composting service.
- Promote resident and building management participation in DSNY-led trainings
Outreach & Communications
- Provide technical assistance to homeowners and property managers on participating in Curbside Composting
- Ensure all key stakeholders are informed of the Curbside Composting services available to them, the requirements by NYC’s recycling laws and mandates to participate, and provide responsive resources to facilitate their active participation.
- Partner with governmental and non-governmental organizations to create and distribute resources and generate citywide support for food education.
- Share and encourage the use of missed collection and materials disposal protocols as well as any other DSNY priority communications with residents and building managers. Escalate to relevant partners where necessary.
- Ensure residents know how to acquire and set up the appropriate waste systems in order to successfully participate in Curbside Composting.
- Establish internal and external communication channels and community networks that foster behavior change.
- Disseminate to necessary stakeholders any key communication from GrowNYC Education leadership and agency partners.
Administrative & Reporting
- Actively participate in team meetings to share work and provide support to GrowNYC Education team members
- Collect data on building and home waste stream contamination through surveys and waste audits to evaluate success and opportunities for improvement
- Complete data entries for each site visit including visit type, number of stakeholders engaged, notes for follow up and signatures
- Prepare periodic reports for schools on progress to date, next steps, and goals for the future
- Contribute to GrowNYC Education various internal and external communications and reports i.e. newsletter, social media, weekly internal reports
- Timely completion of monthly metrics and reports including site visits, timesheets, outreach highlights, images and reimbursements
- Create and send follow up evaluation materials to stakeholders.
All Programs
- Provide relevant and related to support education programs
- Collaborate with education staff to envision and enact new ways of reaching overarching program goals and improve efficacy of existing program models
Qualifications
- 1-3 years of experience in community outreach, engagement and relationship management.
- Fluency in Spanish is ideal but not required.
- Passionate about helping the environment through encouraging sustainability behaviors.
- Comfortable with public speaking, both virtually and in-person
- Valid NYS drivers’ license.
Physical Requirements
Programming takes place citywide, often requiring travel to and from program sites, long-hours on your feet, and the ability to lift and carry materials necessary for programming. The ability to lift and carry supplies up to 50lbs and ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
Schedule
This position is full-time (35-40 hours per week), Monday-Friday, field-based position with some work from home and in-office time as needed. Occasional evening/weekend hours may be required with advance notice.
Compensation
This position is full time and non-exempt. The salary range is $57,000-$62,000 per year and includes full benefits upon meeting the waiting period (medical, dental, vision, life insurance, long-term disability, incentive savings plan, paid time off, Public Service Loan Forgiveness available to employees) Where travel throughout the city is an essential component of job duties, a metrocard will be provided. This is a temporary position funded through June 2025.
Location
This position is primarily a field-based role requiring travel within the 5 boroughs of New York City for approximately 80% of the work week. The remainder of the time is hybrid in the office with a mandatory office presence on Wednesdays.
