Description
Position Purpose
The Advocacy Intern will research and provide written copy for the Habitat for Humanity of the Charlotte Region website, “Our Cause” Advocacy Newsletter, and blogs to ensure consistent advocacy messaging. Other projects include support with advocacy meetings, advocacy ambassadors, and work on various advocacy issues.
Understands and promotes Habitat for Humanity of the Charlotte Region’s mission and guiding principles every day.
Essential Functions
- Projects a positive and respectful attitude that represents Habitat in a positive manner within the community at large and maintains a professional and respectful attitude when interacting with team members, clients, customers, volunteers, and the public.
- Support general advocacy targets including collaboration between grassroots/community-based organizations and elected officials.
- Assisting with the planning/logistics for the “How to be an Advocate” Trainings.
- Research issues as needed on affordable housing and homeownership.
- Assist with preparing written copy for the Advocacy Section of the Habitat Charlotte Region website, newsletter, and other marketing campaigns.
- Accompany Advocacy team as needed to city and county public meetings, and other events.
- Ability to work schedule as dictated by internship and some evenings as needed.

Qualifications
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Work toward a college bachelor’s degree preferred with a minimum of a high school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Motivation to expand writing skills.
- Passion for research with a focus on affordable housing and homeownership issues and policies
- Ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Use of Microsoft Office Suite and other programs
- Comfortable with researching topics related to advocacy issues, newsletter, and website copy.
- Willingness to develop public speaking skills as necessary for related advocacy work.
Work Environment
Reports to work at scheduled times and maintains acceptable attendance records as outlined by Internship Agreement. Where assigned, facilitates open communication with team members, clients, and community partners. Attends and participates in meetings, team meetings, and community outreach programs as assigned. Comply with all HFH policies and procedures, including but not limited to, Personnel Policies and Procedures and Standard Operating Procedures.
Inner office noise level varies and must be able to adjust to team conversations and meetings occurring at adjacent cubicles.
Physical Demands
- Ability to work in an office environment as needed which requires ability to speak, hear, with the visual and manual dexterity to manage papers, reports, and typing.
- Must embody the capacity to maintain the following for several hours at a time: use of personal computer or similar technology, phone, sitting as required.
- Ability to communicate in person, over the phone, and/or via computer.
