About NBCSL
The National Black Caucus of State Legislators (NBCSL) is the premier organization representing and serving the interests of Black state legislators across the country. NBCSL works to develop and promote policies that address the needs of African American communities and advocates for equitable solutions at the state and federal levels. Through policy research, legislative initiatives, and stakeholder engagement, NBCSL drives progress on issues such as education, economic development, criminal justice reform, healthcare, and voting rights.
Position Overview The Communications Manager will oversee the development and implementation of NBCSL’s strategic communication initiatives, ensuring consistent messaging, branding, and outreach to its stakeholders. The role focuses on amplifying NBCSL's mission, enhancing public awareness, and engaging with members, partners, and the broader community through various communication channels.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Communications:
• Develop and execute comprehensive communication strategies aligned with NBCSL’s mission and objectives.
• Collaborate with leadership to craft messaging for campaigns, programs, and legislative priorities.
• Ensure all communications align with NBCSL's branding guidelines and strategic vision.
Content Development:
• Create, edit, and manage compelling content, including press releases, monthly newsletter, semi annual magazine, op-eds, speeches, and social media posts.
• Oversee the creation of marketing materials, reports, and event programs.
• Ensure consistency in tone, style, and messaging across all platforms.
Media Relations:
• Build and maintain relationships with local, state, and national media outlets.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for media inquiries and coordinate interviews with NBCSL leadership.
• Draft and distribute press releases and media advisories to promote NBCSL initiatives.
Digital Communications:
• Manage and update NBCSL’s website to ensure timely and relevant content.
• Oversee NBCSL’s social media platforms, implementing strategies to grow engagement and followers.
• Utilize analytics tools to measure the effectiveness of digital campaigns and make data-driven recommendations.
Event Promotion:
• Lead promotional efforts for NBCSL’s events, including annual conferences, webinars, and community outreach programs.
• Develop communication plans for events, ensuring robust participation and media coverage.
Stakeholder Engagement:
• Collaborate with NBCSL members, legislators, and partners to promote key initiatives and advocacy efforts.
• Develop communication tools and materials to support member engagement and legislative priorities.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or related field.
• 5+ years of experience in communications, media relations, or public relations, preferably in a nonprofit, legislative, or public policy environment.
Skills and Competencies:
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong understanding of media relations and digital marketing.
• Proficiency in content management systems, social media platforms, and analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics, Hootsuite).
• Experience with graphic design tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva) is a plus.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
