The Executive Pathways Program is a paid summer internship (June – August) for college students to explore a rewarding career in public service.

The
Marketing Communications Intern will work within the Office of Employee Culture (OEC), partnering closely with the Agencywide Engagement Director to enhance strategic communication initiatives across the organization. This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a public-sector environment, with a focus on developing key skills in marketing communications, employee engagement, content creation, and visual design. A critical aspect of this role includes utilizing graphic design skills to create engaging visual content that aligns with the agency's messaging and objectives. In addition to graphic design, the intern will assist with content development, contributing to written materials, social media posts, internal communications, and other marketing collateral. This position will provide a comprehensive experience, allowing the intern to build their expertise in both creative and strategic aspects of marketing communications while supporting the agency's broader mission of fostering a positive and engaging workplace culture. Some responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Content Creation: Create and manage content for the internal agency newsletter, podcast, and marketing materials, including graphic design
- Podcast Development: Collaborate with the OEC Video Production Coordinator to develop and manage a sustainable podcast framework, hosting quarterly internal and external speakers
- Event Coordination: Design marketing communication tools to support planning for internal employee events, webinars, or conferences
- Research & Analysis: Conduct research on industry trends and identify innovative communication tools to enhance employee engagement
- Internal Communication: Assist with creating internal talking points, office updates, and strategic announcements to ensure effective communication
- Brand Messaging: Ensure all communications align with OEC values and DHS branding guidelines, maintaining consistent messaging
- Graphic Design: Design visuals and graphics to support engagement champions and events
Minimum Qualifications
To be eligible for an internship, you must meet the following requirements:
You must be a student at an accredited educational institution;
or recently graduated December 2024 or May 2025
AND
- Excellent human relation and communication skills sufficient to represent the position and Division in a professional, efficient, and clear manner
- Ability to work independently and in a team setting
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
- Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and contribute to a culture of inclusion
Preferred Qualifications
- Preferred majors include Communications, Marketing, Graphic Design, or related field
- Excellent Written & Verbal Communication: Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Ability to tailor messaging for different audiences
- Detail-Oriented & Organized: Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining a high level of accuracy and quality
- Creative Mindset: Interest in storytelling and innovative approaches to content
- Team Player: Ability to collaborate in a team environment, as well as work independently when required
- Tech-Savvy: Familiarity with tools like Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Forms, Google Workspace, or communication platforms (e.g., Canva, ChatGPT, etc.) is a plus
Additional Requirements
- Must be in academic years of sophomore, junior, or senior (Graduate students allowed)
- Must provide unofficial transcript to show proof of school enrollment
- Must be willing to reside in Minnesota for the duration of internship
- Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) criminal background check will be conducted on all finalists for this position. Finalists must pass the DHS background check.
