Overview
Reporting to the Director of Communications within the Communications and Marketing department, the Communications Associate directly supports the creation of internal communications materials, implementation of external publicity plans, and administrative needs with the Direct of Communications, who develops and executes the organization's media relations strategy.
This role requires a detailed oriented individual who has a passion for writing, researching, and curating initiatives for effective communications and storytelling. The Communications Associate collaborates closely with other Communications and Marketing colleagues including the Administrative Assistant, Marketing Project Manager, Marketing Associate, Editorial Assistant, and Social Media Manager, and individuals across the school. This role also works with the school’s PR agencies on monitoring the media landscape and incoming press requests. The Communications Associate will have one to two years of experience in PR, arts, and/or higher education. A strong background in writing and classical music is a plus.
The Communications and Marketing department is a team comprised of marketing, communications, editorial, website, design, social media, and digital media professionals dedicated to furthering Juilliard’s mission of providing the highest caliber of artistic education for musicians, dancers, and actors from around the world so that they may achieve their fullest potential as artists, leaders, and global citizens.

Key Responsibilities
Internal Communications
- Collaborate with colleagues across the organization to develop and implement internal communications assets for Communication/Marketing department newsletter and internal platforms
PR/Media Relations
- Support project management of incoming press release, documentary film, and additional Communications request via the Communications and Marketing project management system
- Draft written materials including media advisories, press releases, and select pitches that promote newsworthy stories to further the mission of the school and its performances and public programs
- Monitor Juilliard news inbox and reply to media image requests
- Manage press database including distribution of press releases/advisories and maintenance of media lists
- Oversee and maintain all media reports, press roundups, opportunities for reporting data, and digital archive of press clippings
- Help identifying appropriate targets for pitching and pitch media when required
- Support onsite media managements for interviews, film and photo shoots, and special events as needed
Administration
- Support photoshoots and photographers' needs in capturing the images that best illustrate student work; collaborate with department Administrative Assistant and departments across the school on shot lists, photo selection, and approvals of images
- Schedule and draft agendas for internal and external meetings
- Take thorough notes with action items and deadlines; help ensure deadlines are being met by sharing reminders as needed
- Support Director of Communications and Administrative Assistant with invoicing
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support the department’s internal and external communications goals
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or English; or equivalent experience in the arts, humanities, communications, or higher education preferred.
- 1-2+ years of experience in arts and/or media relations fields with understanding of PR, performing arts, and/or higher education preferred.
- Very strong writing, proofreading, and editing skills.
- Ability to quickly collaborate with a variety of constituents and create cross-department relationships.
- Strong organizational skills with ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proactive and ability to handle workload in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to liaise with a range of departments and colleagues and act with tact, diplomacy, and grace.
- A motivated self-starter who also works well collaborating with a larger team.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Impeccable attention to detail.
- Project management, CRM, and/or database platform experience such as Asana, Salesforce, Muck Rack, Cision, Meltwater is a plus.
- Understanding of the current cultural news and media landscape.
- Familiarity with and passion for the arts, performing arts, and/or education.
- Flexibility with schedule, with a willingness to work evenings or weekends if needed to support particular events.
