The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) is seeking a Publications Coordinator to work at our Alexandria, VA office.
SNAME was founded in 1893 as a technical and engineering Society that supports maritime professions including naval architecture, marine engineering, shipbuilding, offshore, and related industries. We are an international organization with over 4,000 members in professional and student Sections that host events designed to stimulate professional development, create and distribute technical content, and lead our profession. We publish academic and contemporary business works across different platforms. We are also expanding our educational, professional development, outreach, and scholarship portfolio. Our members can be found in all lifecycle phases of ships, boats, and other waterborne assets. Our main office is in Alexandria, VA with a regional office in Athens, Greece.
ThePublications Coordinator reports to the Publications Director and provides project management, sales, marketing, and customer support for SNAME Publications.
Responsibilities Include:
SNAME Technical Journals & MT Magazine
- Manage subscriptions, renewals, and claims; process payments and generate reports; track and analyze subscription trends
- Work with authors, editors, and vendors from peer review to production
- Maintain content on the SNAME website and other publishing platforms
- Prepare mailing lists and ship extra copies of periodicals to individuals or events
Books & Other Publications
- Work with authors and editors on production and distribution for new book titles and new technology & research bulletins, including cover design for these publications
- Fulfill book and bulletin orders; process payments and generate reports; track expenses and revenue; analyze book sales and trends
- Assist in making SNAME publications available for sale in new digital formats
Marketing
- Assist in developing marketing materials and campaigns to promote new titles and SNAME’s catalogue of publications
- Create social media posts to promote SNAME publications
SNAME Maritime Convention
- Serve as Technical Content Coordinator for the SNAME Maritime Convention
- Configure and test the ScholarOne platform; manage submission of abstracts and papers; maintain reviewer spreadsheet; collect final documents prior to the convention; coordinate publication of the online proceedings; coordinate with the events team before and after the convention
Newsletter
- Collaborate with the SNAME staff on compiling content for the monthly newsletter; lay out the newsletter using Adobe Express or Adobe InDesign; coordinate the internal newsletter review process; email the approved newsletter to recipients using Informz
General
- Provide exceptional customer service with a focus on authors, editors, subscribers and customers in addition to SNAME members
- Identify areas for improvement; assist in developing new policies; draft and maintain standard operating procedures
- Utilize association software to post information to communities
- Support the Publications Committee, Director of Technology & Education, Editor-in-Chief of MT Magazine and other stakeholders as necessary
POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND SKILLS:
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing or related field of study
- 3-5 years of work experience
- Understanding of digital publishing, including online platforms and social media for distribution and promotion
- Outstanding organizational and communication skills
- Exceptional attention to detail; strong editor and proofreader
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and build positive relationships
- Comfortable with data entry – financial and/or other content – and generating reports
- Demonstrated capacity to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and quickly adjust to changing priorities and deadlines
- Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions while taking ownership of the task at hand, asking for clarification, and communicating regularly
- Motivated to expand skills and knowledge, as well as tackle new problems and take on new responsibilities
- A flair for creative thinking to develop innovative solutions
- Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint)
- Experience with ScholarOne, NetForum, and/or Adobe Creative Suite preferred
- Graphic design experience a plus
- Must be able to commute to SNAME Headquarters in Alexandria, VA
