Job Description:
Reporting directly to the Director for Government Relations, this position works closely with the government relations team, the office of communications, special events, as well as the designated contacts at all 64 SUNY campuses. The Government Relations Specialist responds to constituent cases, supports event management associated with the Office of Government Relation's outreach and advocacy program, liaises with the NY Small Business Development Centers, and supports Office of Government Relations correspondence.
In addition, this incumbent will help to support SUNY's outreach and advocacy through relationship building with elected officials at all levels of government, as well as engage community-based organizations, non-profits, and advocacy groups when appropriate.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Draft and distribute support and opposition legislative memos.
- Support and propose various outreach events to compliment SUNY's legislative and stakeholder engagement efforts.
- Track and share political and policy developments that could impact SUNY's agenda.
- Assist with the development and maintenance of relationships with SUNY governmental and legislative stakeholders.
- Monitor public hearings, rallies, legislative committees, and other educational meetings.
- Prepare legislative updates for the Chancellor, Senior Leadership, Board of Trustees, and others.
- Assist in the development of policy and budgetary priorities for the system.
- Coordinate responses and solutions for constituent cases brought to SUNY by elected officials and governmental stakeholders.
- Manage a monthly Office of Government Relations newsletter.
- Support SUNY's educational outreach to elected officials on the state, federal, and local level. Draft social media packages elected officials can use to support SUNY initiatives such as application campaigns and more.
- Engage with advocacy partners to further SUNY's agenda, such as educational, social justice, environmental, civil rights, and other coalitions.
- Monitor the appointments of members to college councils and community college boards of trustees.
- Serve as a liaison to SUNY-wide organizations such as the Student Assembly, NYCCT, University Faculty Senate, FCCC, and more to share SUNY's advocacy priorities and strategies.
- Assist in outreach to NY's congressional delegation and federal agencies as needed.
- Produce advocacy related materials, including the annual alumni posters, district profiles, etc.
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree; Master's Degree preferred
- Minimum of one to three years of legislative, government relations, advocacy, or related experience
- Working knowledge of NYS legislative, budgetary, and policy-making processes
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to turn around projects quickly and thoroughly
- Ability to travel
- Occasional evenings and weekends as necessary
Additional Information
- Salary is dependent on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, experience, education, training, and certifications. The range for this position is $67,000 - $79,000.
