JOB SUMMARY:
- Under the supervision of the Emergency Department Nurse Director, coordinates the emergency medical services (EMS) involvement within St Peter’s Health Partner’s.
- Identifies issues between EMS systems and SPHP to ensure continuous improvement of the performance and communications between agencies. Initiates and maintains EMS clinical education programs sponsored by SPHP.
Primary Job Responsibilities And Duties
- Works as a liaison between EMS agencies and SPHP to develop recruitment strategies that encourage EMS providers to bring patients to SPHP and develop positive working relationships.
- Facilitates quarterly EMS/hospital meetings with metric sharing.
- Works as a liaison between EMS agencies and the ED Medical Directors to increase the number of agencies that utilize the hospital as its medical control.
- Coordinator for EMS affiliation agreements and acts as a liaison for these contracts with the Regional Legal Department.
- Develops a Continuous Quality Improvement Program for EMS agencies with the EMS Medical Director.
- Coordinates and/or provides feedback to EMS agencies requesting follow up or inquiring about patients' progression of care who were brought by EMS.
- Manages medical inquiries and customer service inquiries from EMS agencies.
- Develops a newsletter for EMS agencies to continue an open line of communication between the agencies and SPHP and increases the awareness of services offered by SPHP to EMS providers.
- Serves as a member of the local emergency planning committee and attends functions, meetings and events for EMS as an official representative of SPHP.
- Serves on SPHP Disaster Committee and acts as EMS Officer to coordinate response and transportation in the event of a disaster or mass casualty incident.
- Collaborates with Emergency Preparedness team and provides education and training to ED staff regarding Disaster Preparedness/NIMS training.
- Serves as a member of the Stroke/MI/Sepsis Committee and participates in providing education to EMS providers as well as the community. This education is related to stroke/MI/sepsis measures required to fulfill our affiliation agreement as a Stroke Center, chest pain accreditation center and meet sepsis metrics.
- Incorporates new technology, concepts and equipment between hospital staff and EMS agencies.
- Writes clinical policies and oversees their effectiveness with regard to hospital interactions with EMS agencies.
- Partners with the ED leadership team in identifying education needs as they relate to certification and recertification, affiliation agreements, Stroke, Core measures and other Quality Improvement processes.
- Works as a liaison between the Medical Director and EMS agencies to schedule courses that the Medical Director or EMS coordinator will conduct for EMS agencies and coordinate EMS CME programs. Develops a calendar of SPHP courses for distribution to agencies.
- Develops and manages the EMS clinical education and training for students and practicing EMT’s. Responsibilities would include organizing clinical time in the ER as well as the OR, ICU, Cath Lab and OB/GYN departments.
- Works as a liaison between SPHP and EMS training institutions to develop additional educational opportunities for students.
- Works with EMS students to ensure positive educational experiences in different areas of SPHP.
- Works within the scope of practice of a paramedic or nurse within the SPHP ED when called upon.
- Facilitates re-stocking of medication and equipment for local EMS agencies.
- Coordination of activities for EMS week.
Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Associate's degree with EMT – P certification.
- Minimum of three (3) years field experience as an EMT or and three (3) years’ experience as a Coordinator of EMS services, or Registered Nurse, with 3 years EMS/ED experience.
- Position requires excellent organizational and communication skills to conduct business as well as strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Working Conditions
- Working within Emergency Department with exposure to patients and patient elements.
- Includes some office work and some travel within the community.
Reporting Relationships
- Reports to the Emergency Department Nurse Director.
- This position has no responsibility for the direct supervision of colleagues.
