Job Title: Communications Manager
Save the Harbor/Save the Bay is a dynamic non-profit working to restore and protect Boston Harbor, Massachusetts Bay and the marine environment and share them with the public for everyone to enjoy. With offices on the Boston Fish Pier overlooking Boston Harbor, Save the Harbor is the region’s leading voice for clean water and continued public investment in Boston Harbor, the region's public beaches, and the Boston Harbor Islands, providing 3-season programming that works to connect youth, teens and families to our spectacular, urban natural resources.
Save the Harbor has a committed and collegial full-time staff of nine, as well as enthusiastic and engaged interns, volunteers and consultants. We currently adhere to a hybrid work model.
Position Summary
Save the Harbor/Save the Bay is looking for a talented and passionate Communications Manager with communications experience including graphic design, copywriting, website development, press management, and social media to join our hard-working team. The Communications Director will report to and collaborate with the Executive Director and the Deputy Executive Director to manage and coordinate Save the Harbor’s communications and brand strategy.
- Develop and execute comprehensive communications strategies, including press releases, social media content, and designing branded materials.
- Elevate Save the Harbor’s website through reorganizing, rebranding, and building SEO tactics to gain more website traffic.
- Design on brand digital and print content for events, initiatives, publications, and programs.
- Oversee the development and implementation of Save the Harbor's brand across all channels, including management of the Save the Harbor brand style guide.
- Track and measure the effectiveness of communication tactics and social media campaigns.
- Oversee the design and production of publications, such as event invitations and reports.
- Lead digital initiatives, including fundraising campaigns, email blasts, our monthly newsletter, and social media outreach.
- Collaborate with staff to ensure effective internal communication and a cohesive external message using an organization wide content calendar.
- Manage the work and success of the Communication Team’s part-time social media staff member.
- Build relationships with local media, manage event specific press-calls, and position Save the Harbor as a thought leader along Boston Harbor.
- Assist in planning and executing public press events and engagements.
- Foster relationships with local organizations to increase visibility and partnerships.
- Contribute to Save the Harbor’s racial justice and equity efforts.
Desired Qualifications:
- Proven ability to develop and execute comprehensive communication strategies, including press releases, social media content, and branded materials.
- Strong understanding of digital marketing and SEO, with the ability to elevate website traffic through reorganization, rebranding, and effective tactics.
- Ability to meet deadlines, manage project timelines, and communicate with your manager and team if adjustments are needed.
- Experience or interest in overseeing the development and implementation of a brand.
- Collaboration skills to work with a team and lead organization wide communication strategies across multiple programmatic and policy initiatives.
- Preferred experience with managing part time staff
- Ability to create on brand and exciting graphic designs
- Three to five years of relevant experience
- Experience using emailing platforms (eg. Constant Contact), design software (eg. Canva), and website builder and hosting platform (eg. Squarespace)
- A keen interest in key issues facing the city, the region, the nation, and the marine environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work alongside diverse populations.
- Commitment to contributing to the organization's anti-racist efforts centering equity and environmental justice
Salary and Benefits
Salary range for this position is $60,000-$70,000/year based on experience and qualifications, plus benefits including 100% health and dental insurance; vacation, personal, holiday and sick time; 401K retirement plan.

· Strengthens Boston’s waterfront neighborhoods and the region’s beachfront communities by hosting and sponsoring 870 free Better Beaches events and programs on the region’s public beaches from Nahant to Nantasket since 2008.
· Connects over 35,000 youth and families each year with free Youth Environmental Education Programs that have introduced more than 260,000 underserved and low-income young people to the spectacular harbor we have worked so hard to restore and protect since we began them in 2002.
· Convenes and leads our Beaches Science Advisory, which led the effort to transform the South Boston beaches into the cleanest urban beaches in America and is working to improve water quality at King’s Beach in Lynn and Swampscott and Tenean Beach in Dorchester.
