Princeton University’s Office of the Dean for Research (ODFR) serves Princeton's researchers by forging new projects and partnerships, ensuring integrity throughout the research life-cycle, overseeing the responsible conduct of research, and fostering the adoption of discoveries into technologies for the benefit of humanity.
ODFR is seeking a talented communications specialist for the creation and distribution of outreach materials designated for the University research community as well as external audiences.
This highly motivated communications specialist will create communications for a range of audiences, including Princeton faculty, staff and students, as well as external supporters of research. The specialist will produce and maintain department communications materials, including creating written and visual content for websites, producing newsletters, creating and implementing a social media plan, collaborating with leaders to design and prepare reports, and producing attractive and original outreach materials. The specialist will ensure that materials represent the Office of the Dean for Research’s values and the University’s welcoming environment for all.
Applicants should submit a cover letter, resume, and three samples of previous work: one example of writing content for a website or newsletter, one example of the use of social media or newsletters in a communications role, and one example of an item featuring graphic design such as a pamphlet or data visualization.
This is a two-year Term position.
Responsibilities
Content generation and curation:
- Produce department communications, including newsletters, pamphlets, flyers, and other materials to inform the University research community with information about and for conducting research effectively at Princeton.
- Catalogue and maintain assets such as archives of photos and shared materials.
- Other duties, as assigned.
Design And Creation Of E-newsletters, Pamphlets, Presentations And Graphics
- Design, format, and copy-edit presentations and written reports, including charts, tables and graphs.
Website Content Creation And Maintenance
- Create and format content for the ODFR websites and be proactive in maintaining up-to-date information on all sites, working with several different stakeholders.
Social Media Management
- Promote Princeton’s research accomplishments through ODFR social media accounts, proposing and developing content, tracking analytics and engagement, and engaging with other University accounts.
Qualifications
Essential Qualifications:
- Strong written and visual communication skills for producing a variety of products, including for websites, social media, multimedia and print publications.
- Expertise in the use of social media platforms for institutional communications.
- Design skills including knowledge of design principles and the use of software such as Adobe Illustrator and Canva.
- Familiarity with email publication platforms, website design, annual reports, and presentation software. Awareness of importance of the principles of accessibility for a diverse audience.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and work independently.
- Ability to work as part of a team and interact effectively with students, alumni, faculty, and administrators.
- Sensitivity to the needs and concerns of people from diverse backgrounds.
- Willingness to step in where needed and learn new skills; entrepreneurial spirit.
- Attention to detail in every aspect of the work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability or demonstrated interest in learning new software and adopting new capabilities; growing as the communications landscape grows. Areas of growth could include data visualization and videos.
- Bachelor’s degree including coursework in communications, public relations, marketing, or related topics.
- Three or more years of experience working in a communications role.
