THE OPPORTUNITY
We are hiring a Marketing Communications Senior Associate to increase awareness, engagement, and support for the Prison Society’s mission across Pennsylvania by developing creative content and driving digital engagement. Through your work, you’ll showcase our impact, while growing, inspiring, and activating our supporters, followers, and partners.
On any given day, 61,000 Pennsylvanians are incarcerated in state and county prisons. Incarceration in Pennsylvania increased 300 percent since 1980. Lack of access to health care, degradation, and isolation are some of the issues people in prison face. For 236 years, the Pennsylvania Prison Society has led the nation in calling for a more just and humane criminal justice system.
Every month, more than 500 incarcerated people and their families ask the Prison Society for help with issues they face inside prison. Written into Pennsylvania law, Prison Society staff and volunteers respond to these complaints by going into correctional facilities, meeting with incarcerated people, assisting with the issues they are facing, and providing real-time information on prison conditions.
This is where you come in!
Conduct our digital media symphony. Each channel has its own rhythm, you’ll ensure they work in harmony, delivering a unified message that strengthens our brand and impact.
Collaborate with the Communications & Culture Director. As a key partner in editorial planning and communications strategy, you’ll work closely with the Director to shape and implement a comprehensive communications strategy that aligns with our mission.
Drive social media engagement and content creation. You foster a dynamic, two-way conversation that builds community and amplifies our mission. With channel-specific strategies, you create compelling content–including graphics, videos, strong copy–and manage posting.
Ensure our website is always up-to-date with accurate timely content that reflects our work. Collaborating with our developers, you’ll continually enhance user experience (UX) and expand the site by adding new sections as needed to support emerging programs and campaigns.
Manage and elevate our email marketing. You oversee our subscriber lists and ensure supporters receive engaging weekly updates. Beyond that, you take our email strategy to the next level with automated trigger campaigns, onboarding series, and targeted content that deepens connections.
Optimize our outreach through data and strategy. You’ll use analytics and audience insights to continually inform and refine our strategies, boosting engagement across all digital platforms. By implementing tracking best practices like UTMs, you’ll ensure we’re gathering the data we need to target our efforts.
Produce and publish “Graterfriends” the Society’s monthly newsletter for and by incarcerated people. You’ll build an important bridge, bringing relevant news and information to people in prison, and sharing content and perspectives from the inside with the outside world.
Supervise and mentor our stellar comms intern who provides bandwidth to get it all done with your support. Manage their workflow, provide them with coaching, and check their work before it is shared within the organization more broadly. You’ll assist in the recruitment of highly motivated and skilled interns as needed.
Keep communications flowing smoothly. You monitor our inboxes and Slack channels to field communications requests while collaborating with internal team members to address both program-specific and organizational needs.
Your Core Competencies
- You have 3-5 years of experience in a communications role, with a proven track record of driving digital engagement across multiple platforms.
- Social media is your jam. You have demonstrated experience in social media management and engaging online writing. You can present a brief and highly polished example of your design work.
- You’re a Swiss Army knife of communications skilled at navigating a variety of communications platforms including: email marketing systems (Mailchimp), design software (Canva), social media management platforms (Sprout), website builders (Webflow) or similar platforms.
- You masterfully juggle multiple tasks. Keeping track of tasks, deadlines, and projects lights you up - as does crossing stuff off your list. You prioritize and reprioritize, exhibiting excellent time management and strategic problem-solving skills to ensure nothing is overlooked.
- You love connecting and inspiring people. You are energized by writing and engaging with different kinds of people–in person and online. You listen thoughtfully and respond with care and you modify your tone to match your audience.

- You aren’t satisfied until you know that every “i” is dotted and every “t” is crossed. You recognize the importance of going back and making sure your work is correct before presenting it.
- You are a team player. Like a great soccer player, you know when it's your turn to take the ball down the field and when it’s your turn to provide support to another player. You care that the whole team is performing. You value and appreciate being coached as much as you value making your work shine.
