Scientific Sustainability Communications & Design Associate - (Hybrid – Washington, DC.)
Contract role would be joining a small, mission-driven team within a large organization. The candidate will assist staff in authoring, editing, and designing communications for sustainable and green chemistry and engineering initiatives and educational materials.
- Work design: Works under general supervision. Remote work possible; hybrid work preferred with candidate in DC office twice per week.
Work to be performed includes:
- Resolves non-routine problems by applying general policies, practices, procedures, and principles.
- Performs in-depth analyses of standard problems.
- Authoring or compiling scientifically informed content from existing materials such as case studies, presentations, and tools.
- Compiling content around hot topics in sustainable chemistry
- Leveraging Green Chemistry Challenge Awards for case studies
- Assisting in creating multimedia content to highlight green chemistry initiatives and topics
- Mining our inventory of digital resources for insights
- Editing and refreshing existing content
- Proofreading and applying style guides
- Ensuring authenticity of content and appropriate use of AI technologies
- Newsletter coordination and layout
- Manage editorial calendar
- Identify contributors and request articles
- Edit and post articles to blog and e-newsletter
- Author content, conduct interviews, etc.
- Layout newsletter, review, and submit
- Graphic Design
- Create and edit graphics for newsletter, blog, social media and other
- uses in Canva, Photoshop, InDesign or similar program
- Identify photos on stock photography sites
- Direct photographer/videographer at events
- Create PowerPoint slides
- Creative ideas for multimedia content
- Experience with video editing
- Create signage for events
- Social media
- Author and review social media posts
- Review effectiveness of posts and make suggestions
- Evaluate most effective channels
- Collect and analyze social media stats
Required skills and attributes:
- Years of Experience: 5+ years
- BS/BA or equivalent in science and/or communication/design
- A self-starter possessing the ability to quickly absorb information and drive assignments to completion with limited oversight is required.
- Excellent organizational ability, combined with flexibility and adaptability in working with multiple stakeholders and in handling rapidly changing priorities is essential.
- The candidate will have experience in both science and science communication, including visual communication. The ideal candidate will bring interest and enthusiasm, if not experience, in sustainability and green chemistry.
- Ability to write for scientific and public audiences in multiple styles (papers, blogs, social media, as well as multimedia)
- Creativity and aptitude for design and visual communication
- Background in chemistry, chemical engineering, or related scientific field, or experience working in scientific organizations
- Passionate about and capable of excellent organization and time management
- Self-starter with a customer-service focus
- Excellent people skills. Able to work well with internal and external stakeholders, including technical and industrial professionals.
- Proficient with technology, willing to troubleshoot IT systems and websites
- Interest in sustainability, green chemistry, scientific and/or mission-driven issues
- Software Details: Required proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Required proficiency in either Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or similar editing software.
- Experience with social media platforms, social media management platforms, and CMSs.
- Use of task management software helpful. Willingness to learn new software platforms utilized by both internal and external stakeholders required.
- Other technologies nice to have include Asana, Smartsheet, Google Drive, Adobe Analytics, Survey Monkey, Polling software, LMSs, Miro, among others.
