The Role
The newsroom analyst will help us ensure our investment in journalism matches the needs of our growing online audience. The successful candidate will demonstrate a combination of keen data analysis skills and the ability to work with editors and writers to share insights and recommend strategies to reach wider audiences.
Much of this role will be self-led, so we are looking for someone with a history of proactive ownership. Unlike other analytics positions, this role is less about fulfilling requests for data and analysis, and more about uncovering insights that lead to concrete business actions.
This position will work closely with both the product manager & data analyst and with newsroom leaders and writers.
This position will from our offices in Salt Lake City with the option to work remotely at times.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in statistics, math, economics, information systems, marketing or related field
- 1-3 years of experience in data analysis, preferably with digital news media
- Not intimidated by SQL, and interested in becoming a pro
- Basic proficiency with data visualization tools
- Proven ability to translate complex data into actionable insights
- An appreciation for journalism and an interest in digital publishing
- Strong communication skills, particularly in explaining technical concepts
- Ability to work independently and take initiative

- Aid in data-driven decision making across editorial, product, and marketing teams
- Analyze audience behavior and content performance metrics
- Develop and maintain automated reporting systems
- Drive product improvements through data analysis
- Support data journalism initiatives
Day-to-Day Activities
Strategic Projects
- Research and validate hypotheses through data analysis
- Analyze user journeys to identify optimization opportunities
- Develop audience segments and segment-specific strategies
- Design and execute A/B tests for editorial product features
- Lead independent data journalism projects
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Participate in editorial meetings to align data insights with content strategy
- Train team members on metrics and data-driven decision making
- Partner with journalists on data-focused stories
- Support newsletter and community managers with performance tracking
Performance Monitoring & Analysis
- Track and report on key OKRs and audience metrics across all channels
- Create and maintain automated dashboards for real-time performance insights
- Identify trends and patterns in user behavior and content consumption
- Ensure data quality and resolve discrepancies
Technical Implementation
- Build and maintain automated reporting systems
- Monitor data accuracy across platforms
- Document data collection and analysis methodologies
- Implement tracking for new features and campaigns
