Job Description
The Data and Analytics department drives strategic and operational decisions for The Washington Post. This highly visible team applies analytics and insights to support strategic initiatives and day-to-day operational support company-wide and is currently seeking a Principal Data Analyst.
As our
Principal Data Analyst, you’ll work in close collaboration with the professional products, client solutions, newsroom, growth, product, engineering, advertising and finance departments to shape the growth of WP Intelligence, our new professional products business. You will regularly interact with various stakeholders in these departments, understand needs, build reports, conduct data analysis, and make actionable recommendations. You will love solving open-ended problems by taking mountains of data, transforming them into meaningful analysis aimed at identifying solutions and opportunities. You are happiest in a role where you can solve problems where business, math, technology, and practical intuition converge.

Responsibilities
- You will support the growth of WP Intelligence, our new professional products business, by transforming ambiguous questions into KPIs, consulting on data collection, shaping product development, and building assets for self-service
- You work with Growth, Client Solutions, Sales, Product, and Engineering teams to ensure metrics are appropriately defined, implemented, and tested across our digital assets
- You will design, build, and maintain key periodic reports, dashboards and analyses utilizing Redshift, Web Analytics tools (Google Analytics), Python, Tableau and related reporting and visualization tools
- You will synthesize multiple data sources (web analytics data, sales data, marketing data, first party data, newsletter data, subscription data, live events data, and external platforms data) to create a holistic picture of our potential and existing customers
- You will develop best practices and approaches to answer ad hoc questions on online user behavior, customer journeys, engagement, conversion data and multi-channel attribution
- You will lead various testing and optimization efforts by performing in-depth and ad-hoc analysis of information to aid in decision making
- You will prepare and present reports, analysis and presentations to various stakeholders including executives
- You will design and implement self-service tooling solutions to allow stakeholders across the company to get accurate, relevant, and timely insights
- Empower and assist other junior members in the team to inform and influence their data and insights deliverables
- As a senior member of the analytics team, you will foster a culture of transparency, accountability, and communication
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or master’s in data science, Statistics, Business Analytics, or related field
- 5+ years of data analytics experience, with a strong preference for experience in web analytics
- A strong quantitative, creative, and problem-solving mindset
- Collect and manage project ideas, charters, project priorities, and project benefit. Ability to multitask, prioritize projects, and meet deadline
- Strong analytical and communication skills
- Expertise in relational and non-relational Database Systems, Advanced SQL and Microsoft Excel. Experience with MySQL on cloud or AWS Redshift
- Expertise in Python data analysis packages to manipulate data and draw insights from large data sets
- Expertise in Tableau, Looker, R Shiny, D3 or other visualization/ reporting tools
- Expertise in Big Data tools and distributed data/computing tools like Spark, Hadoop (or other big-data solutions), Map/Reduce, S3, Hive, etc.
Preferred Qualifications
- Expertise with enterprise Web Analytics systems (Google Analytics, Adobe Analytics, Google Tag Manager)
- Experience with media/ publishing industry
- Experience supporting tiered product offerings, or subscription/ membership services
- Experience working closely with sales and client solutions teams

Benefits may vary based on the job, full-time or part-time schedule, location, and collectively bargained status.
The salary range for this position is:
98,800.00 - 164,600.00 USD Annual
The actual salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements. This position may be eligible for a bonus or incentive program, and a member of the Talent Acquisition team will discuss bonus payment terms and conditions during the interview process.
