Nonprofit progressive publisher, Hesperian Health Guides, best known for our book Where There Is No Doctor and the Safe Abortion app, seeks a highly organized Communications and Outreach Assistant with dynamic English copywriting skills. This position welcomes entry-level candidates who have a demonstrated ability to write compelling articles, blog posts, newsletters, or social content in English.

The Communications and Outreach Assistant supports the promotion of Hesperian resources to new and existing audiences including supporters, health workers, educators, activists, partner organizations, and users of our apps and digital resources. Unless accommodations are needed, this hybrid position requires 2 days per week of work onsite in our Oakland, California office. As a mission-driven organization, our ideal candidate shares a commitment to promoting social justice and an understanding or familiarity with grassroots outreach and community organizing.

Essential responsibilities:

Write compelling copy for multiple communications channels including a weekly email newsletter focused on health resources and health justice, social media, digital ad campaigns, website and landing page content, partnership campaigns
Schedule, post, and/or monitor content across owned channels (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn) as well as select listservs and websites
Facilitate the localization of social media content in multiple languages (English, French, Spanish, Swahili, and others) and support fundraising and executive communications as needed
Assist in researching outreach lists in coordination with multiple departments. Maintain and update lists and conduct outreach as needed.
Support the planning and organization of presentations and events (both live and virtual) including conferences and board meetings
Work with the Director of Marketing and Communications around content planning and communications strategy
Collaborate with the creative team to develop assets that support organizational storytelling and adhere to brand guidelines
Administrative tasks including scheduling meetings, updating project management systems, and regularly exporting or updating reports

Knowledge & Abilities Required:

1-2 years of work experience in outreach, communications, marketing, or publicity OR a related degree
Excellent written English communication skills demonstrating correct use of grammar, syntax, and an ability to tailor content for various channels and audiences
Excellent organizational skills and high attention to detail
Resourceful self-starter who can take initiative and independently solve problems
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) or Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets)
Familiarity with major social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok)

Helpful to have:

Video editing skills or familiarity with creating short format video/reels
Secondary language skills, especially Spanish, French, Portuguese, or Swahili

Benefits & Compensation: Annual starting salary depending on experience $48,000-52,000. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance, flexible spending accounts, 403(b) plan, paid vacation and personal days, professional development opportunities, and generous family leave policy.

Location: Hybrid: Hesperian’s Oakland office and remote work up to 2 days a week.
