Background/Context
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
The UN Women Training Centre (TC) is dedicated to supporting the UN and other stakeholders to realize commitments to gender equality, women’s empowerment and women’s rights through transformative training and learning. It aims at contributing to building a society that respects and promotes human rights for all women and men through training for gender equality. The gender capacity-development programmes range from basic and introductory levels to specialized and advanced levels for diverse audiences with different backgrounds. In terms of capacity-development strategies and techniques, the TC makes maximum use of on- line training techniques, paying special attention to e-learning courses and an active learning approach.
The Training Centre’s Training for Gender Equality Community of Practice (CoP) is an online community and platform that provides an open forum for dialogue on new and emerging issues related to training and capacity development processes, as well as a platform for articulation and knowledge exchange between training for gender equality practitioners, gender equality specialists, and other key stakeholders from all around the world. At the moment, there are more than 1000 members from all regions and institutional affiliations in the CoP.
The CoP has increasing become a reference on training for gender equality at the global level, achieving the following specific outcomes:
- Ongoing discussion and debate on key issues related to training for gender equality in UN Women priority areas and other topics.
- Ongoing discussion forum to provide input and feedback on Training Centre methodologies, conceptual frameworks, reference documents, resources, courses, etc.
- Network of training for gender equality trainers, experts and other stakeholders.
- Dissemination of information on Training Centre courses and other activities.
- Dissemination of information on global and regional Training for Gender Equality institutions, opportunities and resources.
- Ongoing identification, documentation and dissemination of good practices in gender training.
Virtual Dialogues are online discussions aimed at promoting debate, dialogue, exchange of good practices, ideas, and information on different topics related to Training for Gender Equality that respond to the interests, needs and motivations of UN Women Community of Practice in Training for Gender Equality. The Community of Practice provides gender experts and practitioners with an open forum for articulation and debate, as well as a clearing house of materials and information on Training for Gender Equality. The overall aim of these Virtual Dialogues is to develop an effective and inclusive processes of collective knowledge production with the end goal of improving the quality and impact of training for gender equality and highlighting its transformative potential.
The overall objective of this consultancy is to support the TC with the facilitation of the CoP and the management of communications and outreach, as well as provide support with the increasing demand for online and in person training development.
The consultant will be reporting to Training Centre Chief a.i,, and will work in close collaboration with the eLearning Analyst and eLearning Campus Consultant and will be supported by the Programme Associate, who will be the point of contact on the contract and payment issues. However, the consultant will be expected to work independently and conduct the process effectively and autonomously.
Description Of Responsibilities /Scope Of Work
The objectives of this consultancy are to
- Facilitate the Training for Gender Equality Community of Practice (CoP), including update of databases of training institutions, resources and opportunities; implementing CoP activities; nurturing CoP members’ participation; reaching out to more networks; enhancing visibility of the TC and CoP; Coordinating the virtual dialogues; linking the CoP with other CoPs; preparing CoP newsletter; and producing reports of CoP activities- and support communication activities of the Training Centre (news blast emails, presentations and catalogue of courses)
- Strengthen and expand the UN Women network of the Community of Practice and facilitate internal knowledge sharing: development of the Training Centre SharePoint site as an internal knowledge hub on Training for Gender Equality and as an entry point to the eLearning Campus
- Support Training Centre communications: developing a communications plan, preparing communications materials for internal and external audiences
- Prepare the Training Centre Annual Report as a series of infographics and communications materials presenting main data, case studies and results, including promising practices.
- Support preparation of proposals, concept notes, briefs, presentations and other documents for new training for gender equality courses
- Support the development, implementation and evaluation of new and existing courses, both online and in person
- Support development, implementation and monitoring of the Training Centre Biannual Workplan
- Perform other tasks as needed

IV. Required Qualifications
Education and Certification:
- Master’s Degree in gender or women’s studies, governance and leadership, public administration, human rights, international development, social sciences or related area.
- A first level university in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be acceptable in lieu of the advance university degree
Experience:
- At least 5 years of progressively responsible work experience in gender equality and communications, knowledge management and capacity development or training for gender equality projects.
- Experience in conducting online webinars, and coordinating virtual events
- Experience in facilitating participatory, interactive, multi-cultural training for adults.
- Familiarity with the UN system and specifically on gender equality and women’s empowerment within the UN system.
- Excellent analytical skills with strong drive for results and capacity to work independently.
Languages:
- Fluency in English is required.
- Knowledge of French or Spanish or any other UN official is an asset.
