Job Description
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is looking for an individual with strong communication skills to assist the distribution of traveler information to the public.
Principle Duties
As The Traveler Information Communications Program Manager, You Will
- Communicate traffic plans and impacts via social media, website/phone app, and alert systems.
- Ensure accurate and consistent information across all public platforms.
- Work closely with the Traveler Information Program Manager at the Traffic Operations Center.
- Oversee and guide consultants to provide complete, timely, and accurate information about all travel impacts.
- Collaborate with internal partners to provide complete, timely, and accurate information about all travel impacts.
- Correspond with partners, internal communications, the public, and media partners to develop material for distribution and consumption.
- Monitor lane closures and ongoing construction projects, and review Control Room output for these events.
- Produce media for public consumption via app/web, social media, and report documents.
- Receive, research, and respond to incoming questions or complaints; provide information, explain policy and procedures, and/or facilitate a resolution.
- Develop messaging for public information.
- Ensure that scheduled messages for construction, special events, and public service announcements run on time.
- Assist in addressing questions/requests directed to the AskUDOTTraffic@utah.gov email account.
- Monitor Click n Fix account requests and provide support drafting responses.
- Research subjects of interest, interview subject matter experts, and write short articles for the employee newsletter.
- Monitor and respond to emails received at the 511@utah.gov email account.
- Act as the public information officer as needed; interface with media agencies and provide communications expertise for UDOT.
Minimum Qualifications
In Order To Qualify For This Position, You Must
- A Bachelor's degree, or higher, in English, journalism, marketing, communications, graphic design, or a related field OR equivalent experience.
- Experience using organizational and time-management skills
- Experience working independently with limited supervision
Ideal Candidate
The Ideal Candidate For This Position Will Have
- Experience managing social media platforms.
- The ability to convey information and ideas clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Knowledge of copywriting, proofreading, and editing.
- A working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite programs (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere) or similar software.
- Understanding of customer experience principles and best practices.
Preferences
Preference may be given to those with experience in at least one of the following areas:
- Public relations and/or public information officer.
- Marketing/branding, communications and/or digital graphic design.
- Customer service and/or customer experience work background.

- Communicate information and ideas clearly and concisely in writing; read and understand information presented in writing.
- Learn and use multiple software applications
- Media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods including alternative ways to inform via written, oral, and visual media
- Interact with news and other public media
- Review and/or edit documents for accuracy and completeness
- Use logic to analyze or identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts associated with information or data to draw conclusions
- Develop approaches for implementation of an idea, program or change in operations
Supplemental Information
Here Is Some Information You Should Be Aware Of
- This position is primarily scheduled for normal State of Utah business hours of 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Monday through Friday.
- This position is an in-office position. Minor adjustments may be granted on a case-by-case basis.
- This position is subject to 24 hour availability, seven days a week, for extreme traffic or weather, situations, or planned special events.
- Working Conditions - Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
- Physical Requirements - Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
- Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader.
