Position description
The Inequality Research and Editorial Associate will support the inequality team at the Institute
for Policy Studies. This team strives to help reverse the maldistribution of income and wealth
that is undermining our democracy, fraying our social fabric, and destroying our planet.
What we do:
• Partner with grassroots and policy organizations to develop and advocate for policy changes
that reduces inequality.
• Publicize the latest statistics, research, and analysis through our Inequality.org web site and
accompanying weekly newsletter.
• Elevate the profiles of diverse champions in the battle against extreme inequality by
disseminating their stories, strategies, and lessons through the media.
• Conduct in-depth original research, with particular expertise on taxation, CEO pay, low-wage
workers, charity reform, and the racial wealth divide.
• Disrupt the narratives that legitimate our current levels of extreme inequality by unpacking
common myths, building powerful counter-narratives, and enlisting business leaders and
high net worth individuals to challenge the inequality status quo.
Responsibilities
- Produce research tied to advocacy campaigns
- Work with an IPS team to analyze data for reports, interactive graphics, social media shareables, and other materials that are useful for the key campaigns of worker organizations and other social movement groups working to reverse extreme inequality.
- Fact-check data in reports, op-eds, fact sheets, and other products.
- Provide research and editorial support for Inequality.org and a related weekly newsletter
- Take primary responsibility for maintaining and expanding the “Facts” section of the site, which features Tableau charts on the latest data related to inequality and income, wealth, global, gender, race, health, and taxes.
- Help with posting and other web site maintenance tasks and find ways to incorporate data into blog posts.
- Assist with newsletter set-up, distribution, and marketing. Work with a team to produce and expand the subscriber base for our weekly newsletter and track analytics.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree and at least two years of professional experience or Master’s degree and
at least one year of professional experience.
• Excellent research and quantitative analytical skills, including experience with data
visualization.
• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing error-free analysis.
• Ability to work well on a team and a demonstrated commitment to economic justice and
racial and gender equity.
• Familiarity with the key drivers of inequality in the United States and globally. Knowledge of
one or more priority IPS issue areas, including labor, executive compensation, and taxation
are desirable.
Reporting and Supervision
This is a full-time position, with the organization closing at 1:00 ET on Fridays. The employee
will report to the Global Economy Project Director and is responsible for working collaboratively
with all IPS staff, interns and fellows. This position may supervise student interns.
Location
Ideally, the Inequality Research and Editorial Associate will live in the Washington, DC metro area and work out of IPS’s DC headquarters. Currently, IPS is working on a hybrid model, and all DC employees are working two or more days a week in the DC office. We will consider exceptional candidates who need to work fully remotely.
Terms
This position is ongoing, subject to continued funding.
Salary and Benefits
The salary is $57,000 per year. The Research and Editorial Associate will also receive excellent
benefits including full health insurance for the employee’s family, generous vacation benefits,
paid holidays, a 403(b) match, and life insurance.
Union position
This job is covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with the
Washington-Baltimore News Guild, CWA Local 32035.
