Deputy Editor, Playbook

POLITICO is seeking an energetic editor to ensure our flagship daily newsletter Playbook remains an indispensable read for Washington insiders at time of historic disruption.

The deputy editor, working closely with the lead editor, will be responsible for making the newsletters authoritative, engaging, brilliantly sourced and forward-looking.

The ideal candidate will be a fast and exacting line editor who can also execute on the vision set forth by newsletter’s author and managing editor. This candidate will be highly motivated and organized, helping pull reporting from a brain trust of political and policy journalists from across the newsroom into this marquee daily dispatch.

What You’ll Do

• Edit Playbook for brevity, clarity, accuracy and vibrancy
• Guide Playbook’s reporters on editorial priorities and key storylines
• Work closely with the executive producer, authors, producers and lead editor to ensure each edition of the newsletter is in line with Playbook’s standards
• Help identify and implement ways to improve the reader experience
  
  

What You'll Need

• At least 7 years of professional journalism experience
• Experience editing high-impact newsletters
• Impeccable news judgment, a deep understanding of the Washington political scene and a commitment to nonpartisan journalism
• A track record of clean, clear and sophisticated writing
• A knowledge of and interest in national politics, including the key figures in Congress, the administration and the broader Washington ecosystem
• A willingness to work hours beyond the typical 9-5, including early mornings, nights and weekends
• Eagerness to collaborate with the Playbook team and with colleagues across the newsroom
