Specific Duties & Responsibilities
This position serves as Deputy Press Secretary on the FDC Communications Team.
- Serve as the lead for social media - to include Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and any other emerging platforms. Manage and create content, monitor correspondence and utilize as a tool for recruitment.
- Respond to questions regarding inmates, institutions, probationers, and statistical research in corrections field from national, international and statewide media, the general public and other state agencies.
- Create, edit and disseminate the Department’s statewide employee e-newsletter; assist with the annual report or other in-house publications; assists with writing, laying out and production of said publications, including newsletter, brochures, fact sheets, slide shows, videos and other projects as needed.
- Assists in advising institutional personnel about the Department’s media relations policies and procedures through daily contact with the institutions, probation and parole offices, and other FDC facilities concerning media requests and visits.
- Monitor and distribute department news clips.
- Answer the public affairs press line and respond to calls from media and citizens.
- Write and distribute press releases and media advisories as assigned.
- Assist with agency recruitment efforts, to include creative content and marketing job fairs.
- Provide staff support to agency leadership at events.
- Researches and analyzes statutes, correctional policies, best practices, trends and other information.
- Assists in coordinating with subject matter experts to research issues and prepare appropriate responses/recommendations for communication initiatives. Responds to questions regarding inmates, institutions, probationers, and statistical research in corrections field from national, international and statewide media, the general public and other state agencies.
- Coordinates news media and media witnesses in the event of an execution by contacting the Florida Association of Broadcasters (FAB) and the Florida Press Association (FPA) when a death warrant is signed; act as liaison between the FAB and FPA and Florida State Prison as media witnesses and circumstances of the execution change; provides non-witness news media with relevant information as the execution process progresses.
- Arranges interviews between reporters and inmates by contacting the designated institution to determine approval or disapproval from the inmates, reviewing the reporter’s credentials and determining when and how the interview will take place.
- Assists in developing and distributing standardized departmental policy related to the operation of the Public Affairs Office to DC personnel regarding media relations, requests and visitors.
- Advises and visits regional and local facilities for the purpose of developing localized information and media relations programs and strategies.

Required Qualifications
- Four (4) or more years of news reporting, public relations, public information, advertising, marketing, mass communications or journalism experience. Postsecondary education may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
