Position: Host/Hostess/Maître d
Essential Functions
Providing the highest level of personalized service based on basic philosophies of Glen Oaks Country Club (
GOCC) Handbook and Training. The host/hostess/maître d job description in a broad overview is to help supervise and coordinate the activities of the dining room in the restaurant. Display the highest level of hospitality and enthusiasm through ongoing training, utilization of resources, and good business standards to provide world-class service to all Members and their guests. Genuine interaction with the members & their guests will set Glen Oaks apart from our competition. A host/hostess/maître is the first impression of an establishment so make sure you make a good one.
Job Duties/Tasks
- Realize that Service is our #1 product at GOCC and upholding a standard of excellence in this area is your #1 priority.
- To be effective, organization is key and includes keeping the stand or reception desk clean and organized at all times. Your first duty when getting to work is making sure that it is organized and ready for operation.
- Have a comprehensive knowledge of service routines.
- Provide complete service to the Members and Guests according to the Club’s Mission Statements and organizational goals.
- Greets and seat Members and Guests and maintains order and cleanliness.
- Be available throughout the shift to assist Members with any questions, concerns, or requests as needed.
- Has thorough knowledge of the phone system. Can professionally answer the phone, take to-go and deliver orders, place calls on hold, and transfer calls when necessary.
- Has thorough knowledge of the menu and the ability to accurately enter orders through the Jonas point of sale system.
- This is the first impression for members entering the dining space. Greets members and guests with a smile in a friendly and professional manner. Uses member names whenever possible and learns them when they don’t know. Coat check when necessary.
- Suggests and describes various appetizers, entrees, desserts, alcoholic beverages, and wine to Members and Guests.
- Coordinates food service involving communication between Kitchen and Service Staff.
- Complete opening, mid-shift, and closing duties as they pertain to your scheduled shift to maintain a smooth-running operation.
- Make sure all menus are wiped down, free of spots or stains, and complete. All marketing in the menus should be up to date.
- Prepare the Lounge space with mints, toothpicks, newspapers, and newsletters as needed
- Check with the receptionist to assure you have all reservations by 4 pm.
- Check with ACM to assure there are no large or private parties or other information you do not know of by 4 pm.
- Plan out the seating chart and organize the reservations by 4:30 pm (planning is everything when running an effective host stand).
- Be sure that all table lighting, dining room shading & music levels are up kept/adjusted at all times.
- Greet guests, escort them to their table, pull seats out for the ladies, and present menus as needed.
- Make sure the server is aware members have been seated in their section promptly.
- Keep the counts for individual servers so the balance of work/members served comes out fair at the end of the night.
- Keep in constant contact with the servers and the kitchen to make sure you are available. A large part of the night’s effectiveness is orchestrated from the host stand to the kitchen & servers.
- Occasionally check bathrooms for upkeep, contact housekeeping when necessary.
- Say goodbye to all of the guests. Ask about their dining experience & relay comments to F&B Director &/or ACMs. Not only is the host or hostess the first impression the guests get when they come to an establishment, but they are also typically the last. You should check with every guest and if there was any kind of problem, resolve it if possible or quickly get a manager.
- Set up and break down of buffets. Setting up the banquet/dining rooms. Stocking of the server stations.
- Setting/Resetting tables with silverware, glassware, and clean linens as needed.
- Maintain and clean service-related equipment.
- Be aware of Club events and current information for salesmanship and professionalism as it pertains to the newsletter.
- Maintain a high level of visibility and equal association with all Members.
- Abide and adhere to the GOCC employee handbook.
- Performs other duties as assigned from time to time.
- Assists supervisors in setting up special events and parties throughout the Club.
- Promotes high morale and enthusiasm among staff by providing a positive and team-oriented mentality both on and off the floor.
- Provides a high level of cooperation and communication with all allied Departments of the Club.
- Communicates with Clubhouse Manager and Assistant Clubhouse Managers about all Member dining experiences to help promote the best possible service throughout the Clubhouse.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to withstand long periods on their feet and walk various distances. Need to look sharp and professional at all times. Try to keep jewelry to a minimum and do not over-perfume. Hair should be neat and clean and men should be clean-shaven daily. Must be able to deal with respectably but not limited to, stressful situations while ultimately correcting the problem. The employee is occasionally required to walk, stand, climb, or balance. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Reasonable accommodations will be made for persons with disabilities.
Education And/or Experience
- Host/Hostess experience preferred with strong communication and guest relations skills.
