Job Description

About the Role

Wirecutter is looking for an experienced journalist to cover smartphones, mobile accessories, and wearable devices. These are important beats for Wirecutter, and you will bring experience covering personal technology for a general audience.

You will write in-depth guides, how-to pieces, and explainers, appear in videos for Wirecutter’s social channels and contribute to newsletters. You will maintain our current guides to product categories like iPhones, Android phones, and smartwatches, create new guides that fill in gaps in our existing technology coverage, and write short-form pieces that help our readers get the most out of their devices. You will work on an editorial team that focuses on technology, including computing, networking, and privacy and security, and may work on content that crosses categories.

This role is based in New York City, but has the potential to be remote.

Responsibilities

  • Research, report, and write long-form guides and short-form articles on the aforementioned beats; think creatively about sources; identify experts; and conduct meaningful short- and long-term tests
  • Collaborate with editors to conceive new content and formats and move ideas from pitch to publish
  • Request product samples and process their return
  • Interview experts and methodically scan user reviews and forums to find what matters to readers
  • Be Wirecutter’s in-house expert on all things mobile device-related whether for pieces by colleagues or external media appearances
  • Collaborate with photo, video, and illustration departments to produce visuals to support articles
  • May attend trade shows and product news events to build contacts and expertise in relevant topics
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the Senior Editor, Technology

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years experience writing or editing reviews of consumer technology products and services at a major publication or media company
  • 2+ years experience working with both the Apple and Android ecosystems
  • 2+ years experience with project management tools such as Trello, Basecamp, Asana and similar platforms, as well as the ability to build testing plans and evaluation criteria for personal technology devices

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years experience with a distributed team that works remotely across many time zones
  • Ability to work collaboratively and patiently through multiple rounds of edits and balance the demands of multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously

Please Include

  • A cover letter explaining your relevant experience and your interest in Wirecutter and consumer technology.
  • Résumé/CV
