Social Media & Communications Intern
Assist in managing and growing the city’s social media presence by developing engaging content, capturing and editing photos and videos and supporting campaign strategies that align with organizational goals. Contribute to broader communications projects, public relations efforts and electronic media initiatives as assigned. Gain practical experience, obtain critical professional-level exposure that informs future career choices and develop skills.
This Internship is part-time and temporary, working no more than 29 hours per week up to one year maximum. Schedule can be flexible within the business day, with occasional weekend and evening assignments scheduled with notice.
Essential Functions
- Write, develop and schedule social media content for platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and NextDoor, as well as the city’s internal and external website.
- Monitor social media engagement and trends, providing insights to improve performance.
- Attend and assist with events and meetings.
- Capture, create and edit high-quality photos, videos and graphics for posts, stories, reels and other city communications materials.
- Write for publications both internally and externally, including the city newsletter, news releases and emails as assigned.
- Collaborate with the team to brainstorm and execute creative campaigns.
- Assist in developing content that reflects and celebrates the city’s diverse communities.
- Ensure messaging and materials are accessible to all community members, including underrepresented groups.
- Build meaningful relationships with stakeholders, community partners and departments to amplify messages and foster engagement.
- Research and pursue new and existing community engagement opportunities as directed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recent graduate of an undergraduate or graduate program in mass communication, journalism, public relations, advertising or related field.
- Intermediate competency level with various social media platforms.
- Photography skills (DSLR, mirrorless or smartphone cameras), supported by sample portfolio pieces and/or links to work samples.
- Basic knowledge of and familiarity with Adobe Photoshop or similar editing software.
- Demonstrated interest, through coursework and/or extracurricular activities, in communications, including video production/broadcasting, journalism and/or graphic design.
- Intermediate proficiency Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Demonstrated ability to perform in accordance with the City of Plymouth’s CIVIC values (customer focus, integrity, visionary, inclusion and connection) and comfort with supporting and advancing the city council’s strategic priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Intermediate proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
- Experience with Adobe Premiere Pro.
- Knowledge of AP Style Guidelines.
- Related work experience.

Physical Requirements
- Very frequent (often required to perform the job): sitting or standing, stationary desk or bench work with neck bent forward, handling objects (grasping, turning or otherwise using hands or hand), repetitive hand motion (typing, using computer). May be required to work outdoors at events to take photos.
- The employee must be able to lift/carry items from 0 – 5 pounds from 0 – 6 feet. Employee must be able to lift items such as cameras and office equipment.
