Volunteer Services Intern - Applebaum Fellow 2025

This internship will work with Volunteer Services staff to learn the duties and responsibilities of non-profit professionals. You will partner with Volunteer Services staff on two focus areas - volunteer recruitment and event planning. Interns will also interact with DZS volunteer corps and guests.

This exclusive opportunity is supported by Applebaum Family Philanthropy and provides education and work experience, exposure to leadership, networking and skill enhancement opportunities, and unique interactions with other student participants of the program.

The internship is an 8-week paid opportunity requiring a minimum commitment of 25 hours per week and participation in 3 – 4 program sessions with other Applebaum Fellows.

Eligible participants are undergraduate/college students currently enrolled in schools based in Southeast Michigan. Students must be in their sophomore year or higher (equivalent). If a student resides outside of Southeast Michigan or has graduated before the start of the program, they are not eligible to participate.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities

  • Identify and partner with staff to support the volunteer recognition program.
  • Coordinate and attend volunteer recruitment events.
  • Identify and catalog community organizations for volunteer recruitment.
  • Create a community engagement newsletter template to connect organizations with volunteer opportunities.
  • Plan and execute a volunteer recognition event.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Sophomore year or higher-level college student enrolled in a human resources or business degree program.
  • Work experience in customer service or nonprofits preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Excellent organization and communication skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work promptly.
  • Flexible schedule includes evenings and weekends.
  • Outstanding organizational and time management skills.
  • Familiar with Google Suite/Microsoft Office.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Event Planning, Marketing, Recruitment, or Community Engagement experience.

Working Conditions

Work is conducted both inside and outside and may include work in adverse weather with the outside environment, heights, and exposures. The position involves exposure to all types of weather, air conditioning, and heating systems. Interns may be required to prepare materials in advance and present them in a professional setting.

Physical Requirements

Physical work is part of the job and includes walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, and bending for long periods; must be able to lift at least 20 pounds. The individual must have the ability to perform essential functions of the job satisfactorily.
