Copywriter

CFC has a need for a Copywriter to join the Corporate Communications team. This is a hybrid position requiring onsite work at our headquarters office in Sterling, VA, as well as optional remote workdays. The Copywriter supports the Corporate Communications team by creating content that informs staff and members while ensuring the organization’s voice and editorial style as well as best practices are reflected.
As a Copywriter, you will:
- Carry out assigned content creation work and ensure accuracy and adherence to corporate and AP style.
- Write content such as newsletter articles, industry briefs, conference materials, posts for the employee intranet, training materials on company products, staff engagement collateral or multimedia scripts and presentations.
- Meet with stakeholders to create engaging digital content for various communication channels and platforms.
- Keep abreast of trends in content and style reflected on various online and social media channels.
To be successful, you will need:
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications or related field.
- Three years of experience writing in a corporate setting.
- Experience working in the electric cooperative or energy industry a plus.
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, social media platforms and other digital communications and content management systems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Expert understanding of the English language.
- Advanced spelling, grammar and punctuation along with ability to make and take constructive suggestions.
- Ability to translate technical information into lay language.
- Proficiency with applying the principles of AP Style to different types of writing.
- Proven record of excellent writing demonstrated in a professional portfolio.
- Ability to work independently and consistently meet deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with internal stakeholders and colleagues.
- Knowledge of social media platforms and various forms of digital communication, including podcasts, marketing emails, newsletters and websites.
- Willingness to collaborate with a creative team of subject matter experts, graphic designers and others.
- Basic knowledge of legal issues involved in publishing, such as libel and plagiarism.
- Basic knowledge of finance and utility industries preferred but not required.
- Good time-management skills, including prioritizing, scheduling and adapting as necessary.
- Proficiency with computers, especially with programs such as Microsoft Word, SharePoint, Teams, Outlook and PowerPoint.
