About Como Student Community Cooperative

Como Student Community Cooperative (CSCC) is a member-owned housing cooperative that operates a 357-unit residential complex, providing affordable housing for students and student families of the University of Minnesota.


SUMMARY  

The Member Services Coordinator plays a key role in strengthening the cooperative’s governance, ensuring its long-term perpetuation, and fostering an engaged and informed membership. This position is responsible for connecting with and educating members about cooperative principles, governance structures, and opportunities for active participation.


In addition to governance responsibilities, the Member Services Coordinator facilitates community engagement through the planning, procurement, and execution of activities and events that align with the cooperative’s mission and values. This is done in collaboration with the Community Activities Committee (CAC), community groups, and management to build a strong and vibrant cooperative culture. The role also serves as the primary point of contact for volunteer coordination and oversees internal communication channels to ensure transparent and effective member engagement.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES 


Governance & Cooperative Perpetuation
  • Collaborate with the CEO and Operations Manager to design and implement stockholder orientation programs to educate new members on cooperative principles, governance structure, and membership responsibilities.
  • Conduct committee orientations, ensuring new members understand governance practices, decision-making processes, and cooperative policies.
  • Develop and implement initiatives to increase member participation in governance, including educational materials, workshops, and outreach strategies.
  • Serve as a liaison between management, governance committees, and stockholders, ensuring transparent communication and member engagement.
  • Maintain and update membership requirements, ensuring compliance with cooperative policies and best practices.


Community Engagement & Volunteer Coordination
  • Oversee and support community events in collaboration with the Community Activities Committee (CAC) to enhance member engagement.
  • Lead volunteer coordination efforts, including recruitment, orientation, and placement of volunteers in various cooperative committees and initiatives.
  • Develop long-term relationships within the co-op community to foster a culture of involvement and civic engagement.
  • Assess and support the needs of governance committees, actively recruiting and referring volunteers to fill key roles.
  • Facilitate effective communication between volunteers and staff to ensure members are informed about events, activities, and governance opportunities.


Member Communications & Outreach
  • Manage CSCC’s internal social media presence, ensuring engaging and relevant content is shared to promote cooperative participation.
  • Assess and implement new social media strategies to enhance community outreach and governance engagement.
  • Oversee The Spirit, CSCC’s monthly online newsletter, including content creation, editing, and distribution, with periodic redesigns as needed.
  • Coordinate and oversee marketing and promotion of cooperative events through multiple channels, including social media, email, and print media.


Event Planning & Community Development
  • Plan, implement, and oversee large and small-scale community activities in partnership with the CAC and CSCC management.
  • Manage event logistics, including budgeting, procurement, and staffing, ensuring a seamless and engaging experience for members.
  • Maintain inventory records for event-related purchases and supplies.
  • Foster relationships with residents, actively promoting cooperative values, engagement, and community-building initiatives.


SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES  

  • Perform miscellaneous projects and complete various tasks as needed by management or team members. 
  • Assist tenants needing immediate support or serve as back-up to other staff members. 
  • Maintains storage of activities items in CSCC storage spaces. 


JOB SPECIFICATIONS 


Desired Education and Experience
  • Experience in community engagement, volunteer coordination, or community organizing.
  • Knowledge of cooperative governance structures and best practices (preferred).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience in social media and newsletter management.
  • Proven ability to plan and execute events, manage budgets, and coordinate logistics.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with diverse populations.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with multiple stakeholders.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and Canva.
  • Communication & Relationship Management:
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build effective relationships with board members, volunteers, staff, and residents.
  • Clear and professional written and verbal communication.
  • Proficiency in social media management for community engagement and outreach.
  • Organizational & Problem-Solving Skills:
  • Strong customer service skills, displaying professionalism and responsiveness.
  • Excellent organizational abilities to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and priorities.
  • Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving skills; able to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
  • Effective team player, understanding the importance of collaboration in a cooperative setting.
  • Time & Task Management:
  • Strong time management skills, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability.
  • Proactive, solution-focused mindset, with a sense of ownership and urgency.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Other Requirements:
  • Valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation are required.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS NECESSARY TO PERFORM THIS JOB 

  • Ability to hear and speak clearly for phone conversations and in-person communication.
  • Ability to sit at a desk for extended periods, performing computer-based tasks.
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity for computer use and handling office equipment.
  • Capacity to perform physically demanding tasks, including climbing stairs and lifting as needed.
  • Ability to move throughout the office and community grounds to assist with events, emergencies, and operations.


TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED 

  • Proficiency in operating multi-line telephones, calculators, copiers, computers, and other office equipment.


Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $22.00 - $25.00 per hour


Expected hours: 38 per week
