The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Position Summary
The Wellness Director reports to the Executive Director of the Office for Postdoctoral Affairs and Early Career Research and manages wellness initiatives for the early career research population at Columbia University. The goal of this position is to promote the health, wellness, and overall well-being of all members of the early career research population.
Responsibilities include offering outreach, education, and non-clinical support focused on facilitating well-being. This will primarily involve working directly with researchers but may additionally involve working with faculty and staff who work directly with this population. While supportive relationships may develop with the researchers, the Wellness Director does not offer individual therapeutic relationships or psychological counseling.
In aiding the research population, this position will develop collaborations and relationships with other on and off-campus organizations, such as Office of Work-Life, International Students and Scholars Office, and/or outside campus psychological treatment providers to offer comprehensive wellness services and support as well as connect researchers to appropriate wellness resources and treatment.
Responsibilities
Outreach, Training, and Education:
- Develop monthly wellness programming/workshop(s) for researchers using internal and external resources.
- Grow and lead wellness/work-life balance courses specific to researchers.
- Advance and offer quarterly wellness orientation for new researchers.
- Facilitate researcher peer support group.
- Assist in training and advising faculty, staff, and researchers on managing and responding to indications of concern.
- Develop and offer new wellness programming as needed to address identified wellness needs of the population served.
- Build and maintain collaborative relationships with internal Columbia offices.
- Serve as subject matter expert on best practices for researcher wellness programming and well-being.
Supporting Case Management
- Offer 1-on-1 appointments with researchers to discuss well-being and connect them with appropriate resources for continued wellness. (NOTE: While supportive relationships may develop with the researchers, they do not offer individual therapeutic relationships or psychological counseling.)
- Provide 1-on-1 consultation and workshops to departments, individual supervisors, or staff members as needed to offer guidance on wellness topics impacting the working relationship with researchers.
- Enhance and maintain list of external mental health resources available for researchers and maintain a direct line of consultation with these resources.
Administrative Tasks
- Assess wellness needs of the population via formal and informal feedback methods, such as surveys, individual conversations, and focus groups.
- Maintain wellness budget of the Office for Postdoctoral Affairs and Early Career Research.
- Develop and disseminate regular wellness-oriented communications (e.g., monthly wellness newsletter).
- Update and maintain wellness page of the office website.
- Serve as point of contact for wellness related inquires and vendors.
- Participate in local and national conferences related to wellness and researcher training.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; Minimum 5 years of related experience.
- Experience or training in creating and leading wellness programming.
- Experience with program development and management.
- Experience offering individual wellness coaching.
- Expertise in wellness and mental health, particularly within the research community.
- Knowledge of and experience with the early career research population.
- Excellent interpersonal, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
- Flexibility and ability to adjust on to new demands.
Preferred Requirements
- Master’s or PhD in psychology, mental health, public health, nutrition, or related area of wellness.
