Job Description:
SUNY Empire is currently seeking a Communications Specialist in the Office of Communication. The communications specialist serves as a writer, editor, interviewer, and researcher, producing articles, stories, press releases, social media posts, and other communications that raise Empire State University's public profile and demonstrate the value of a SUNY Empire education. This position will report to the director of communications and work closely with all areas of the university.
Responsibilities
- In coordination with the director of communications and the chief communications officer, develop, implement, and manage communications plans that align with the university's strategic priorities.
- Manage SUNY Empire News, the university's internal news source, and keep content fresh, updated, relevant, and accurate.
- Manage SUNY Empire's external news site and keep content fresh, relevant, and accurate.
- Manage and distribute the university's weekly email newsletter.
- Conduct interviews with university faculty, staff, and students to craft profiles and stories.
- Assist with press/media outreach, as needed.
- Assist, as needed, with writing stories for the university's magazine, Connections.
- Assist with ensuring accuracy of information and consistent branding, style, and standards across all written and visual communications produced by or reviewed by the Office of Communications.
- Help build, maintain, and update media lists.
- Assist with writing and editing, as needed, for special events, such as commencements and press conferences.
- Work with Digital Media Services and Information Technology Services to consistently keep lobby screen content current and accurate.
- Assist with special events, including commencements across the state, the Annual Meeting, the Spring Student Conference, press conferences, and other events, as needed.
Job Requirements
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in journalism, communications, or a related field
- A minimum of 1-2 years of experience writing for print, digital, and social media platforms
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment where multitasking and prioritization of work is necessary to succeed
- Excellent attention to detail and organization
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in higher education or journalism
Special Information
- The preferred location of this position is Saratoga Springs, other SUNY Empire locations may be considered.
- Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. VISA sponsorship is not available for this position.
