This is a full time, exempt, in person position. Pay is based on experience.

Position Purpose:

The Communication Director will manage and direct public information activities and maintain a strategic plan for brand management through all media outlets and social media apps for the Mississippi Lottery Corporation. This role involves managing and guiding the communications team, acting as a point of contact for all media outlets, responding to social media apps in a timely manner, overseeing media relations, and ensuring consistent messaging across platforms.

Major Tasks, Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities:

Effectively communicates the Mississippi Lottery’s mission and goals to the general public.
Acts as the lottery’s liaison to elected officials, the Gaming Commission, and any other state agencies regarding lottery topics.
Monitors legislative issues involving lotteries.
Leads the effort to promote the Lottery’s “Play Responsibly” campaign.
Coordinates MLC efforts with the World Lottery Association’s (WLA) mission to promote responsible gaming.
Processes public records requests in accordance with company policy.
Serves as the front-line contact for all media outlets and events for the Mississippi Lottery.
Cultivates and maintains contacts in various media outlets throughout the state of Mississippi.
Represent the organization at public events, conferences, and forums to enhance visibility and support community relations.
Writes and distributes press releases to announce winners, introduce new products and services and other newsworthy developments of the Mississippi Lottery.
Prepares briefing materials for the Mississippi Lottery’s executive staff and/or Board of Directors.
Maintains information on distribution of lottery proceeds to the state, develops public information materials and serves as liaison for the Mississippi Lottery to beneficiary agencies.
Responds to questions, complaints and requests for information made by citizens, vendors, players, public officials, etc. Notifies key Mississippi Lottery staff members when appropriate.
Works with the Vice President of Marketing to develop marketing campaigns to advertise new product rollouts.
Leads, mentors, and manages the Communications Specialist, providing guidance, support, and performance feedback.
Participates in out-of-office promotional events and functions, when appropriate.
Directs promotional contests and drawings.
Coordinates production of daily (Monday-Friday) morning winners’ report for radio broadcast.
Provides updated information of marketing strategies to internal employees.
Analyzes market trends to assist with the company’s product development and strategies.
Contributes to the company website and helps to ensure it is maintained.
Conducts on-going study comparing Mississippi Lottery to other U.S. lotteries of similar size/market.
Oversees production of monthly internal newsletter and quarterly external newsletter.
Coordinates production of annual report.
Assist with photo editing and document design.
Keeps abreast of lottery industry trends and events.
Maintains budget for the communications department.

Education, Experience, Abilities:

High School diploma (or GED) required. Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Mass Communications, Public Administration, Public Relations or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Ability to travel as needed; may include overnight stays.
Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in communications, with significant experience in writing and managing press releases and other media materials.
Demonstrated experience in crafting and editing press releases, with a strong understanding of AP style and its application in various communication materials.
3-5 years in a leadership role preferred.
Proven track record in handling media and corporate relations.
Knowledge of multiple social media platforms (Facebook, X, Instagram, etc.)
Proficient in Microsoft Office
Familiarity with various communications tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, iContact, WooBox, Capcut, Canva, etc.
