Position: Great Lakes Talking Books Reader Advisor & Recording Director

Part-Time: 22 hours per week, plus sporadic additional hours from 2–14.5 hours weekly when recording books

Compensation: $17.00 hour; Retirement Plan

Position Summary: Serve as reader advisor and outreach coordinator for Great Lakes Talking Books (GLTB), a free service of the National Library for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS) available to residents of all ages who are blind or have a visual impairment that makes them unable to comfortably read print books, have a perceptual or reading disability, or have a physical disability that makes it hard to hold or manipulate a book or to focus or move the eyes as needed to read print books. GLTB serves all counties of the Upper Peninsula as well as Alpena and Crawford counties in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. This position also administers GLTB operations of the Victoria E. Wolf recording studio at Peter White Public Library.

Job Duties

Serve walk-in patrons.
Select and order books and magazines based on each reader’s interests.
Outreach to public libraries and community organizations to promote the NLS talking book service.
Create a biannual newsletter for GLTB patrons.
Maintain the GLTB WordPress website. • Assist Director with statistics reported annually.
Follow-up with inactive readers, lost materials, and other problem-solving activities to improve Talking Book service.
Contact NLS leads and share completed patron applications for service.
Add and maintain patron accounts ensuring they receive books and magazines of interest.
Follow up on new accounts, inactive accounts, suspended and transferred accounts.
Train and support patrons using the Digital Talking Book Machine, BARD Mobile, and braille eReader.
Administer training for volunteer readers at the Victoria E. Wolf recording booth.
Assist and train Peter White Public Library staff regarding use of the recording studio and equipment.
Coordinate and oversee recording sessions with volunteer narrators.
Operate software to record, monitor, review and process the recordings made by volunteer narrators.
Assist Sound Engineer with editing recordings.
Other duties as required.

Qualifications and Skills

Bachelor’s Degree in library studies, education or related field desirable.
Writing and communications skills required.
Computer skills and knowledge of MS Office applications required.
Willing to learn new software applications.
Able to work independently, follow directions and be organized.
Excellent people skills (friendly and considerate of all library staff and patrons).

Working Conditions

Work from home opportunities available, with some in-office work required.
Other physical requirements: Manual dexterity and ability to operate a keyboard and other office equipment. Ability to hear and answer on the telephone.
