ProPublica is an independent, nonprofit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest.

We are looking for a creative and strategic product manager to grow and optimize our portfolio of email newsletters. This person will be expected to make a real difference in an organization that's growing and moving at the pace of news.

Your work will play an essential role in fulfilling our mission: producing journalism that spurs real-world change. That means helping grow the reach, diversity and loyalty of our audience through newsletters.

This role reports to our newsletter editor and chief product officer and will be embedded with the audience team.

Responsibilities

Work with teams across the organization, including audience, product and fundraising to use newsletters to execute the organization's editorial and business objectives.
Collaborate with the newsletter editor and other newsroom stakeholders to ensure we are producing, building and sending daily, weekly and monthly newsletters with rigor and excellence.
Use editorial judgment informed by data and analysis to increase subscribers, engagement and loyalty among our newsletter audience, always putting the user first.
Continually improve our approach through ongoing experimentation, prototyping, research and testing to optimize for open, clicks and retention, including churn reduction.
Work with the newsletter team, designers and product to create specifications and plans to launch new product features or optimize existing ones, including templates and branding.
Manage overall email list health, send domain reputation and deliverability requirements.
Keep apprised of developments and changes in industry trends, both in the email marketing space and the news industry.
Deliver monthly, quarterly and as-needed reports on newsletter performance for the audience team and senior leadership.

Qualifications

3+ years of relevant experience, preferably in product management, growth marketing or work on newsletters.
Experience with email service providers such as Sailthru and analytical tools such as Google Analytics, Parse.ly or BigQuery.
Critical, creative and strategic thinking skills.
Project management experience, with the ability to assess and prioritize needs, map out clear processes and execute projects across many products simultaneously.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Track record of taking initiative and navigating the needs of various stakeholders.
Experience assessing data and insights and recommending actions and initiatives based on that information.
Demonstrated ability to build and grow audiences. Media or nonprofit experience is a plus.
Experience on email redesigns and/or email service provider migrations.
Proficiency with HTML and Markdown syntax.

The expected salary range for this position is $95,000 to $115,000.

This is a good faith estimate of what we expect to pay for this position. The final salary figure will take into account a person's experience, accomplishment and location. ProPublica is committed to paying its staff equitably, and these ranges should not be considered career salary limits or caps.
