Social Media Manager

Are you passionate about ending plastic pollution and using social media as a tool to help do so? As the Social Media Manager, you will be responsible for managing all facets of social media for Plastic Oceans International and Plastic Oceans Europe.

You will be an integral member of our global team, playing a key role in communicating our brand, mission, goals, current programs and future plans. This is a full-time position that will entail working directly with the Director of Marketing and Social Media Manager for Plastic Oceans Chile and Plastic Oceans Mexico, while collaborating with the Director of Europe.

The ideal candidate will have at least two years of experience in managing multiple social channels. Nonprofit environmental experience is desired, but it’s not a requirement. Knowledge and/or interest in environmental conservation is ideal for this position. Looking for a team member that is well-organized, creative, collaborative and a natural storyteller. They must be equally comfortable working in groups, as they are in working solo.

If selected for this role, you will be responsible for creating content that drives engagement to our social media channels, creates valuable connections with our audience, and elevates awareness of our mission and organization. You will bring new ideas, concepts and strategies to the table.

We’re looking for an ecowarrior with strong writing skills, love for fcontent creation and experience successfully managing social media accounts.

Type of Employment: Full-time (40+/- hours per week ) / Immediately

Contract length: 3-month probationary period, with the goal of a long-term contract

Compensation: $1,500 to $2,500 US monthly depending on experience and location

Location: Remote - Ideally in North or South American time zones or within 2 hours of ET

Responsibilities

Manage social media presence on Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter for POI and POE and work towards creating a new presence for POI on TikTok within 6 months
Posting 5-6 posts on average weekly per platform for POE/POI
Create Facebook and LinkedIn events
Post in collaboration with our @treesandseasfestival account to ensure content is posted on that account
Develop and schedule content calendar, working with the Director of Marketing to ensure strategic alignment across all communic
Create content tailored to the social media platform using current trends to communicate our messaging along with templates and brand guidelines

(i.e reels for Instagram, blogs/articles on LinkedIn, remaining active with retweets on Twitter, etc…) You will work closely with the other Social Media Manager to collaborate on content ideas and creation.

Execute and manage social media campaigns, collaborating with partners and Plastic Ocean branches when needed
Take the initiative to contribute to the overall communication team
Share IG stories with links, including resharing other branch and partner content
Create Facebook and Linkedin events
Manage social media deliverables and tracking for sponsors and partners
Brainstorm with the team on how to incorporate storytelling and educational content over social media and help execute
Social listening to find inspiration for storytelling and educational content
Develop strategies to increase social media presence, engagement and grow an engaged following
Like comments and answer direct messages maintaining the brand’s voice for POE/POI. Work with Social Media Manager for POM/POC to like comments and answer DMs (responsible for english) for Trees & Seas. Working towards finding a community manager to train and delegate this to with the Director of Marketing and Social Media Manager for POC/POM.
Focus on value-driven “give” content to create a balance between “give” and “get” content. Focusing less on mass appeal and more focus on capturing engaged followers eager to learn more and take action. Targeting primarily those who already have a basic foundation on the plastic pollution crisis, but want to understand the problem and solutions deeper.
Engage with branches and partner’s content (i.e BlueCommunities partners)
Quarterly reporting on social media performance
Manage social media tracking and deliverables for sponsor
Post when needed on BlueCommunities Facebook group (10-15 yearly)
Help with content-related projects outside of social media (i.e gathering clips for promotional videos, photos for brochures, etc..) by pulling from assets used for social media content

Communication responsibilities to grow into depending on career interest

(These would entail a salary increase, along with a title change to communication coordinator or another more fitting title depending on roles)

Review newsletter copy with the Director of Marketing, working towards helping with newsletter copywriting
Help manage website reviews and create landing pages on WordPress/WIX
Run social media ad campaigns and boost content
Optimize blog and website content for SEO
Blog content curation, publishing and optimization

Requirements

Passion for social media and making the planet healthier and more just for all
Foundation knowledge of the plastic pollution crises, with a keen interest to learn more and keep current within this area on your own and from our team
2+ years of marketing experience ideally in social media. Background in marketing or social media certificates would be a plus but work experience and portfolio take precedence.
Strong writing and skills, with attention to detail and the ability to story tell
Experience creating graphics, reels and ideally TikToks
Creative and strategic thinker with experience executing content creation, storytelling and social media planning
Beginner/Intermediate design skills, ideally familiar with Canva
Strong time management and organizational skills
Excellent team player with collaborative skills
An avid user of social media platforms with knowledge of current trends and best practices, along with an interest to continue learning
Ability to easily manage multiple assignments and problem solve
Ideally, experience working with Sprout Social and WordPress
Ideally, strong communication and verbal skills open to being on social media lives, stories, partner takeovers, etc …
