Full-time, San Francisco Bay Area, $90,000 - $130,000, performance bonuses

We’re looking for a detail-oriented go-getter who is on the ground in San Francisco to lead planning and execution for an events business.

You’ll be the first Events hire and the fourth person on our team, taking a key role in organizing major industry events like the Cerebral Valley AI Summit. We just hosted our 2nd AI conference in November, which featured 350 hand-picked founders, investors, and other attendees. Speakers included Vinod Khosla and Reid Hoffman. Read about it here.

These are exclusive, premium, invite-only events attended by well-known startup CEOs, top partners at major venture firms, and reporters at major media outlets. They’re on the small side, 100-400 people. We’re planning on doing about four similarly sized events in 2024, along with some dinners and smaller gatherings.

You’ll work on the physical event itself—planning everything that’s going to be there when our attendees, sponsors, and speakers show up.

The details and feel need to be right. It’s difficult to balance authenticity and polish, so sharp instincts are key. And we move fast, regularly planning events in 8 weeks or less. We’ll need someone decisive and creative to keep things moving on timelines that give us an advantage over bigger companies.

We’re a startup ourselves—just 3 people—so it’s not your classic 9 to 5. That means we need a self-starter who’s comfortable with ambiguity and likes to problem solve. We generated more than $1 million in revenue in 2023 and the business is profitable and growing fast. We’ve just hired a reporter to help the newsletter business grow—we want you to do the same for the events business.

This is an opportunity to grow and explore, make impactful decisions, and experience what it’s like to turn event ideas into something real, memorable, and exciting.

Responsibilities include:

Manage the physical parts of all of Newcomer’s events, like the venue and vendors, at a high quality and premium feel
Develop and maintain relationships with top-tier vendors, suppliers, and partners to ensure successful event execution
Plan and manage several small gatherings like private dinners on behalf of Newcomer or partner companies
Drive strategy for events and related verticals as we grow from a Substack newsletter into a major player in Silicon Valley media

The ideal candidate has:

3-6 years of work experience in autonomous, fast-paced, client-facing work environments
A high-agency, hands-on attitude. You’re willing to do what it takes to get the details just right, even if that means doing the little things yourself
Strong design sensibility and instincts for a good event
Great communication, organization, focus
Based in the San Francisco Bay Area

Nice to haves:

Experience with multimedia journalism, including video and audio
Preexisting relationships in the venture capital or founder communities in SF
Previously planned events for premium business audiences
