Under the direction of the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director is a full time exempt position responsible for the overall management and successful operation of the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum (MMGM). The Executive Director provides leadership, vision, and direction by coordinating with the Board of Trustees on long term planning and direction, operating as the Museum representative in the media, fundraising and community settings and overseeing all museum departments.

Leadership And Board Relations

Collaborates with the Board of Trustees and Museum leadership to develop long term vision, strategy and goals for the MMGM.
Maintain clear and consistent communication with Board Chair and Executive Committee.
Facilitates communication, cooperation and building a cohesive work environment for all departments within the museum.
Identify areas of need and seek volunteer resources, educational resources and professional opportunities for staff and Board.
Ensures compliance with all licenses and documentation for MMGM’s 501c3 status.
Keeps the Board apprised of conditions, opportunities, issues, and challenges in the operating environment so that the Board can perform governance, financial oversight and leadership duties.
Implement strategic MMGM priorities and annual goals.
Recruit, manage, and evaluate staff and volunteers, fostering a collaborative, respectful, and inclusive work environment.
Facilitate clear and positive internal communication, engaging effectively with both volunteers and staff.
Implement and maintain HR policies to ensure a safe, equitable, and productive workplace.
Provide leadership, mentorship, and professional development opportunities for staff.
Provides support to all Board Committees as needed.

Administrative Oversight

Supervises and leads a team of full and part-time employees
In conjunction with the Curator plan, organize, interpret and present exhibitions, lectures and outreach programs.

Community Engagement And Public Relations

Represents the MMGM in its relationship with the community and its partners.
Develops programs, community activities, and appropriate meetings which further the mission of the MMGM and benefit the community
Oversees all written and verbal coordination from the MMGM, including publications, e-newsletter, website and social media presence.
Responsible for the development and implementation of marketing strategies and results.
Build partnerships with schools, businesses, community organizations, and local governments to enhance public engagement.
Serve as a trusted and compelling representative of the organization to elevate the public profile of MMGM and facilitate fundraising, community partnerships, and visitor engagement.
Oversee the production of publications, online content, and other marketing efforts to promote MMGM.

Fundraising And Fiscal Management

Oversees all financial and accounting functions.
In collaboration with the Finance Committee, oversee the management of the annual budget.
Makes financial recommendations and facilitates annual budgeting process with the MMGM Treasurer.
Provide ongoing management to assure museum operations and programs stay within approved plans and budgets.
In collaboration with the Development Committee, create and execute fundraising plans, including grants, major gifts, membership, corporate sponsorships, and fundraising events, with support from the entire Board.

Minimum Professional Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree (degree in museum studies/geology or related field preferred)
Managerial and leadership experience (experience in a non-profit is preferred)
Budgeting and financial management skills.
Human resource management skills.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
An ability to develop collaborative partnerships with donors and granting agencies as well as volunteers and community agencies.

Work Environment: This is a full-time salaried position. Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for special events and meetings will be required. Some limited remote work is possible as appropriate.
