The Grain Valley R-5 School District is seeking a highly qualified and collaborative leader for the role of Communication Specialist. This position is responsible for the coordination of the district’s communications program promoting the district’s goals, including the development of accurate and timely internal and external communication and information processes promoting an informed and engaged community.

Duties And Responsibilities Of The Position

Coordinate the district’s social media strategy and implementation.
Serves as a public information officer and designated spokesperson for the District with the media.
Develop specific project communication plans including production schedules.
Create content, update, post and for the district’s website, and provide assistance and training to staff.
Provides public relations counsel for District staff.
Coordinate the use of parent electronic notification systems.
Maintain excellent relationships with students, administrators, teachers, other staff, parents, and community members for the purpose of serving as a communications liaison for schools and programs.
Write for a variety of audiences and purposes including a community newsletter, staff newsletter, district website, marketing materials, news releases, and other print materials.
Edit and proofread print materials for accuracy, consistency, clarity, and style.
Innovate and plan public relations initiatives.
Photograph district events and activities for use in district materials.
Coordinate and document the Teacher and Staff member of the Year Awards program.
Communicates effectively with the media and plans meetings and activities to enhance dialogue with media on an ongoing basis.
Works with the staff in crisis situations that involve media coverage.
Attends School Board meetings and coordinates the Board recognition.
Other duties assigned or apparent.

Required Experience, Skills, and Abilities

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field, and/or experience in journalism, communications, or a related field, required.
Thorough knowledge of media operations and public relations functions.

Work Environment

Reports to Assistant Superintendent of Academic & Student Services
12-month contract
Salary starts at $55,000
