Company Description

Center for Supportive Communities (CSC) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation based in Lawrence, KS, that uses behavioral science to create equal opportunities and meaningful change for children, families, and communities. CSC's SupportED program functions as a community diversion program for Douglas County truant students and their families, using evidence-based interventions to increase school attendance and engagement. CSC consults with organizations and providers to enhance the quality and efficacy of service delivery within and beyond Douglas County.

August 2024 – May or July 2025(end date is negotiable)

Time Requirements

You must dedicate 22 hours each week during your service term or a total of 675 hours. Your weekly schedule will be flexible.

Position Location

SupportEd operates in Douglas County, Kansas (i.e., Lawrence, Eudora, Baldwin City, and Perry Lecompton). Student meetings will occur in the community at a time convenient for you and the student with whom you work.

Role Description:

As a Communications Assistant and AmeriCorps member, you'll play a key role in amplifying CSC's impact and advancing our mission. This dynamic role involves crafting engaging content for social media platforms, developing captivating newsletters, and supporting various communication initiatives. You'll collaborate closely with the communications team to ensure our messaging is clear, compelling, and aligned with our organizational goals.

Work with staff on social media communications
Develop digital templates for use on a variety of social media platforms
Assist with website maintenance
Work with staff on monthly newsletters
Maintain a caseload of 1-2 students at any one time
Facilitate 1.5-hour weekly meetings in the community
Be a caring, supportive, stable, and positive role model
Assist in administering functional assessments
Implement individualized, reinforcement-based interventions
Teach functional skills and assist in homework completion, problem-solving, social-emotional development, goal setting, and career exploration
Conduct mental health checks
Monitor weekly attendance, grades, and behavior
Collaborate with families, schools, mental health providers, child protective service workers, and assistant district attorneys
Assist families in accessing community resources and services
Complete weekly documentation and progress reports
Compile and graph data
Assist in volunteer training and supervision
Attend weekly and as-needed meetings with program supervisors
Attend scheduled AmeriCorps trainings
Track your weekly service hours
Assist in recruitment and manual preparation
Present at truancy review hearings (if applicable)
Report instances of abuse and neglect (if applicable)

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate for this role will have:

Strong writing skills with an ability to create engaging content for social media platforms and newsletters
Experience in managing social media accounts and crafting compelling newsletter content
Ability to work independently and efficiently
Familiarity with internal communication strategies and platforms
A background or interest in behavioral science or education is preferred
Excellent organizational skills and time management abilities
Course work or a bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field
U.S. citizen or resident alien status.
Background knowledge in a marketing, communications, or human-service field (e.g., applied behavior analysis, psychology, social work, social welfare, special education, or counseling) or juvenile law
Proven experience in working with children, families, and schools
Proven experience in tutoring or mentoring
Cultural competence

Relevant experience or coursework in psychology or education would be advantageous.
